Any fishermen here?

I like to fish when I have time off, but I usually go fishing around the lakes where my father lives, out towards Modesto. I've gone out fishing in the ocean a few times on charter boats and from the piers quite a bit, but last weekend I was out near Half Moon Bay and seen a few people fishing from the rocks near the shore. Has anyone here done any fishing from the shore? Did you have any luck? Do you know of any good places to fish from? I think I'll give it a whirl on Monday if I'm back from Modesto. There's nothing better IMHO than spending the day out fishing with my son when I have the time for it. *Note: I'm from California. Modesto is in the Central Valley and Half Moon Bay is a bit south of San Francisco.

I'm fishing for compliments every now and then, that's all. To be honest, I'm more for full-contact fishing - get in there, *whack*, *bite*.

Well here in Minnesota the fishing is different than California. However we do fish from shore. In spring the fish all move to shore (spawning time, plus warmer shallow waters), so few people bother with the boat. Latter in the season the fish tend to move to deeper water. Even then there are fish swiming all over and you can get a nice meal from shore. The fishing is different though. Shallow water means you need to find a way to keep your hook off the bottom. (think of realing back in, not just what the depth is where you are fishing) Best: ask people who are there. Some are friendly and would love to teach a new guy how to fish that area. (just beware, many of these people are snobs for one type of fishing, if they you there is only one way to go, learn that way from them, but don't blind yourself to the other ways - they might suit you better)

In spite of my last name, I do very little fishing (probably only 10 - 15 times in my life). But, my brother in law fishes a lot. He owns his own bass boat, attends a fishing club, enters a few tournaments every year, fishes almost the entire length of the Mississippi over 2 or 3 years, etc. If you're after bass, and you're in the midwest, I'm sure he could recommend several good fishing spots -- as long as you aren't planning on entering a tournament! ;P John
