I used to use Norton AntiVirus, but switched to Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5 after reading all the reviews on how thorough it is. While it has had a varied past on virusbtn (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?kaspersky.xml) it seems to be stable now. NOD32 has an impressive past and is faster but I still prefer Kaspersky. Some people on broadband rely on the modems built-in firewall, but this is not an option for dial-up connections. What is your favourite AV software and why ?

I used to use FreeAV but got some virus with it (without spreading). I made some other research to find a better antivirus, and the best (free) I found is Avast. You just need to register, and it's free for home user.

I prefer Computer Associates' eTrust EZ Antivirus. It's inexpensive, reliable, doesn't destabilize systems like other popular products, and requires little care. The default behavior is to download updates every 24 hours, and periodic full system or custom designed scans are easy to schedule. I've heard that it is the only product from this company that works without problems too numerous to describe, and my own experience with two or three of them confirms that rumor for me. But this one product is extremely well executed, and I'm quite satisfied to continue using it indefinitely. I am using ZoneAlarm with AntiVirus[^]. It combines the excellent ZoneAlarm software firewall with an antivirus program. (I thought I read somewhere that it used the same AV engine that Computer Associates uses for it's eTrust line, but I can't find the link now).

Yep, I actually swapped to this over Norton, and know quite a few other people that use it.

Yup. And I noticed that the free CD Microsoft has been distributing with all the security patches on it contains a one-year free subscription. Smart move, Microsoft - I approve! If that's what it takes to get some of my idiot friends and customers to try AV software, I'm all in favor of it. I offer to install it on every system I'm called out to repair. I think it's a great product. Of course, having said that, it will probably turn on me and do something hideously Nortonesque to my machine next week, after working flawlessly for years.:~ "My kid was Inmate of the Month at Adobe Mountain Juvenile Corrections Center" - Bumper Sticker in Bullhead City

You can use AVG Anti Virus for free if you're a home user. I'm a little paranoid so I use both that and McAfee (company's) on all three of my machines "I believe I referred to her personality as a potential science exhibit." - Elaine, about Ellen, in "The Dog"

F-Secure[^] Antivirus 5.41: + My university offers it without charges for all students and staff members + Easy to use (not fancy buttons or graphics - just simple UI). + Automatical virus database update (and I think that it also detects very well different kind viruses) + Stable and fast + Doesn't use much processing power when running background + Good virus description database available in the Internet + Centralized management: you can push virus updates to multiple machines in your network + You don't notify it unless there is virus coming from somewhere - Backwebclient: providing too much information and using too much processing power and bandwith (luckily you don't need to install backweb). - if you need to buy it, it will cost pretty much "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the universe trying to build bigger and better idiots.
