Muscle doesn't consume anything, unless you use it. Fat cells (adipose tissue) store calories that you consume but don't use, but those calories are available to provide the energy required to construct new muscle tissue from proteins that you consume. Good going! Takes a lot of effort for sure! My sister used Lemon Drops. I know when I quit smoking back at August 22,1989 I put on 75 lbs before I figured out what was going on. There were problem times but the worse had to be the after meal smoke. It seemed like the meal was never over :) The Lemon Drops (candy) can really help if you put some in your pocket and use them when you feel the urge to smoke. I've seen references to this in many places, WebMD is just the most reputable source I found when doing a quick search. I tried typing "basal metabolic rate increase muscle" into Google, and - surprisingly - almost all of the first page of hits AGREED that the BMR can be raised by increasing your lean (or muscle) mass. So apparently it really IS something that everybody knows. :) It probably says this in some reputable books as well, but I am at the office right now and can only search the Web... :| -- Diane C "I think it would be a good idea." Until recently it was assumed that people should drink something like 7 glasses of water a day however it's been shown now that drinking and eating anything that contains water is sufficient and beliefs like the one that drinking coffee dehydrates have been proven to be completely wrong. Actually people tend to get exactly the amount of water they need naturally as their bodies will ensure that on their own unless stuck in a desert with no food or water or something. The reason to drink more water than usual when you quit smoking and excercise more is that it helps to more quickly deplete the smoking toxins that are stored in the body fat etc and probably more importantly both cause a direct net calming effect in emotional state which is critical when you quit smoking because for most people it's about the most stress they will ever face in their life.

Very interesting. Of course I wanted to know what you were talking about and found what looks to be a discussion of the source of this new information here http://www.pihealth.com/water.htm[^] First I sincerely thank you for bringing this information to my attention. In reading that article I did find the general direction that you refer to. However I must say that it seems you might be overstating some of the points. There is a discussion that the recommended amount for the "Average Person" of 64 ounces a day does not seem to be arrived at from any real formula stemming from the original research. Personally I always question most of the numbers produced from studies and polls. Even this article states that there is no disputing the general issue that getting enough water is vital to health issues. The real question is, "what is enough" and that does not seem to be known at this time.

Conversely, no one disputes that getting enough water is crucial. Indeed, the elderly often have a diminished sensation of thirst and can become dangerously dehydrated without realizing it. People with kidney stones, for example, require lots of water, as does anyone doing strenuous exercise.

There are other points clarified as well, like getting water from food does count. That you don’t have to use bottled water, I don’t know anyone that thought that. Also that you can drink to much water (no it's not called drowning :-D ) and there is even a cited case where a marathon runner apparently died from doing just that. However given the extreme nature of that instance it does not appear that the average person is in any danger of drinking to much water. So as usual, since we are all different, you need to pay attention to your own needs. John, thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

Hi, I've never seen that information before, what I had heard was more along the lines of people think that they aren't getting enough water when it turns out they are actually getting plenty from food etc and that the body will naturally crave water when it needs it so there is no use in force-drinking water because it's probably not doing any good. I like to go mountain biking, about every second day I go for a very strenuous 1.5 hour ride. Before any ride I always make a point of drinking a very large glass of water even if I'm not thirsty, I try to do it about half an hour before the ride. It seems to make a huge difference because on the ride I'm not dying for a drink over and over, but can just stop and take a sip when I feel like it whereas if I don't pre-hydrate I'm not as energetic and must stop more often to drink. I guess the bottom line is I think people should spend more time listening to their bodies and less time reading studies which seems to be the way you feel as well. ;) Weird about the marathon runner though, would make a good episode of CSI crimial investigation show.

Since she asked you to quit smoking, she should be the craving replacement. ;) Steve

Besides, they gum up the filters.;) I haven't had much luck with the patches, either. Someone suggested that I may be rolling them too tight, as I find them hard to keep lit.
