This may not be the best place to ask this, but I am extremely frustrated with my monitor. I am using a Dell 19" CRT monitor, at 1600x1200. It all worked fine until last night, I discovered that the characters on the edges of the screen seemed very blur, and the more it was closer to the center, the better. Anyone who experienced this or any suggestions?:wtf:

Yeah, I've got the same problem with my Sony 21" at work. It's also starting to discolour in the bottom left corner :(. I think it might be time for a new monitor... If management lets me :sigh:

Thats what happens when monitors get old... Try calling dell, if it is still under warentiee it might help. If CRTs weren't so cheap a TV repair guy might be able to adjust it (you might be able to do it too, but there are dangerious voltages involved so I'm not gonna recomend it). I'd seriously consider a new monitor. If you can at all afford it LCDs are a lot easier on the eyes than CRTs. (note, you might want to get a second video card as well, even though this monitor is dieing two displays are nice to have and you can deal with not having all of it) I've expirenced it myself. I have one monitor that I've adjusted so there is a black border around the display so that it is readable. You can try plugging in the cable and screwing it down tight. That might help, but I wouldn't count on it. It might also help to move other equipment away (speakers and radios). Your symptoms don't really sound like either of these will work, but it can't hurt to try. Can you live with a lower resolution and/or a different refresh rate? Many monitors are at the max at the resolution you are running. It is worth expirimenting to see if the monitor is useable at something less. (you have to judge this yourself) Even if something does work for now, start saving your money. Eventially you will reach the point where it isn't worth trying to save the monitor anymore. good luck

I have a nice AOC 19" LCD for work, a very nice monitor for the price, unfortunately the speakers that are built into the base are tinny to say the least.

Thanks for the detailed info. I tried a lower resolution and a different refresh rate, they did not help. Sign, I guess you are right, it is simply getting old, but I have been using for barely two years, and it was pretty expensive at the time I got it. Thanks again.

If it is under warranty, get it replaced now.

This is a long shot, since blurred characters at the fringes is not a usual symptom, but have you tried degaussing the monitor? It's a little-used function in the monitor menu, intended to erase any residual magnetic fields in the CRT that usually distort the colors on the screen, but it also sometimes improves the focus of the electron beams. It's worth a try... "My kid was Inmate of the Month at Adobe Mountain Juvenile Corrections Center" - Bumper Sticker in Bullhead City

I tried to follow what you have said about the degaussing, I was not able to locate this function...

Different monitor manufacturers put degauss in different places in their monitor menus. On my dell monitor, degauss is under options. Some manufacturers only use the degauss symbol, which looks like an upper case U with a slash through it. (Accessing and navigating the monitor menu is usually done via buttons on the front of the monitor.) Hope that helps:)
