    Hi everyone, I am applying for a new job and have completed most of the application, except for the cover letter. I am a bit stumped on how to start and how long it should be. Anyone feel like sharing their cover letters fpor a sw engineer post? :-D I think I will look for websites with sample letters. Cheers, Pankaj /** I'm the one who's gonna have to die When it's time for me to die So let me live my life The way I want to - Jimi Hendrix */

          The purpose of the cover letter is supposed to be to add any extra detail to the CV/resumé and/or application. However, being realistic, your covering letter is likely to get separated from your application or resumé, which may well get put in a database. If it's relevant, put it in the resumé or application. You should be tailoring your resumé to each job you're applying for anyway. This leaves the covering letter with the stub role of ensuring that the right person is reading the rest of the contents. Be polite, say what job you're applying for, say what else should be in the envelope, and sign the letter. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

              The letter should explain the skills you have to fill the position you are applying for. Every one looks at jopb applications differently, imagine what happens when 50 cvs land on your desk and you have 30 minutes to read them. The cvs are all in different formats and it is very difficult to see if the appllicant has the skills you want. So I would look at the letters first the ones that explained they had the correct skills I would put to one side, I would then read the accompanying CV, if there were 6 good candidates, I would ignore the rest. And staple it to the CV

                Even better... Sir, coverletter.begin(); while(!resume.eof()) { resume.readline(); } coverletter.exit(); Steve
