The press release[^] suggests that Avalon will be included, but WinFS will not. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

This is Paul Thurrott's take: http://www.winnetmag.com/windowspaulthurrott/Article/ArticleID/43785/windowspaulthurrott_43785.html[^] It appears Microsoft has encountered reality. There is no technical reason Avalon and Indigo can't be backward compatible with XP and every business reason to ensure they are. My take has long been that WinFS is ultimately a lost cause. Microsoft has been working on it for years and has very little to show for it. Ultimately, WinFS simply doesn't solve any real world problem in a compelling way. It's rather pathetic, and telling, that that the only rational MS ever offers for WinFS is how to organize your music and photo collections. If I had to bet, I'd go out on a limb and suggest pragmatism will win out and Microsoft will release an XP SE in mid-2006 with Indigo, a scaled down version of Avalon and a totally bastardized version of WinFS (which they will claim is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but which will prove to be totally useless.) Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke

Regarding WinFS... What the Windows File System lacks is: - general interface to file properties (such as compound files, but open up for other types as well) - A Search that uses them (shucks, a search that WORKS out of the box would be great!) - Link tracking - Encapsulated files The first three "sound like" a database, but I still think it's overkill.
we are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is Vonnegut jr.
