I am used to being able to download the latest Platform SDK from Microsoft's public FTP server at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/platformsdk/ but found that the February 2001 version was the latest one available. There is a directory for the June SDK, but it's empty. Just recently I was digging around in the MSDN download area and saw that there was a June release! However, they're now using some kind of web-based installer. You can click the "Full Download" link at the top of this page to grab 15, 25 MB files. Unfortunately, the 12th file is corrupted. I really wanted a copy of this on CD so I could install it on several computers, so I broke down and paid the $8 S/H to get the disc directly from Microsoft. Well, I just installed it on my testing machine, and I have to say, I do NOT like the new installer! X| It still uses the Microsoft Installer (MSI), but now it's an ActiveX web-based installer, presumably to make updating components of the SDK easier. Granted, the web installer is at version 1.0, but still... Also, if you do not uninstall the February SDK, you will have two copies. The new one installs in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK instead of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Platform SDK. I notice the directions that came with it do not say anything about this. I would be curious to know your experiences with this new Platform SDK and its installer. How many of you even knew there was a June release? I didn't, and I was checking all over the place. It seems that Microsoft didn't promote this one as much. Not making it available on their FTP server didn't help either. -- Paul "I drank... WHAT?"

As of 2-3 days ago, the 12th file was not corrupted. As far as the SDK, it is ok. I downloaded, I ran, it installed, I was happy. Really, what more can you want. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Hmm... Interesting. Okay, then it might have been a glitch that I hit last weekend, and now it is fixed. Another thing I just found is that most of the sample files in the multimedia directory are gone. As I write DirectShow filters, some of the samples are rather useful. Oh well! Enough griping for one day :-) -- Paul "I drank... WHAT?"

Yeah, I wouldn't know about samples. As long as the lib and h files are there, I am happy. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.
