Honestly Marc, I am not involved in any way. I've been on this research kick regarding social software. As I explored Habbo, I couldn't help but wonder why this style of chatting wasn't more popular. When I evaluated the system, I found it to be a particularly good example of social engineered software. But most of my programming colleagues disagree yet the best they can articulate is that they "don't like the feel". Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.

AAntix wrote: Honestly Marc, I am not involved in any way. Ah, OK. :-D Here's some thoughts: The conversation messages are not associated with any person, as far as I can tell, so you don't know who's talking. I couldn't figure out a way to talk to a specific person. It's cool that there are people sitting in chairs and stuff, but how do you talk to a SPECIFIC person? It would be nice if the conversations you heard were localized, so you could move about the room like in a cocktail party and evesdrop and figure out where you fit in. That would be fun! (It seems like it might be--maybe that's what "talk" and "shout" was all about, but it needs some fine tuning, I think). People can block the stairways. They should just be moved out of the way, or you can go through them. How about speech synthesis for the conversation that you are within earshot of? It would make it more natural. In fact, with a little ingenuity, you could do a Skype thing, but broadcast your own voice only to those within earshot. hehehe. Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing

Has anyone utilized Habbo.com's isometric, Sims-like chat system ( http://www.Habbo.com[^] )? Is this 3d virtual world just a novelty, or does it really provide a more in depth social experience while chatting? What advantage does this view provide over a convential chat system? Ah you want the age old cocktail party effect. This is more or less what my thesis was based on. Blind source separation of sources in varying positions. Its not that hard to simulate that effect. http://www.cis.hut.fi/projects/ica/cocktail/cocktail_en.cgi[^] "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

Load up some 10 signals or so of sound files of conversations say. Now make a mixing matrix that applies varying "weights" to all sound files. That will correspond to the distance that you are from each converstaion. Now if you want the roaming effect you need to make the mixing matrix time varying. You can do this by using a [ sin cos -cos sin] matrix to slowly rotate the mixing matrix around by degrees. Err...I thought maybe it was something more sinister... Sounds like the age old problem of narrow minded developers. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

I'd be interested in seeing a practical implimentation of this. The whole chat thing hasn't improved much since relay chat etc. Regardz Colin J Davies Attention: It's finally arrived, The worlds first DSP.

Actually the problem works in the other direction. There are sound files that are mixed time varying-ly and we try to split them. I could write this pretty easily in Matlab but a real time implementation would be rough work I think. Would be a neat virtual reality effect to have in chat rooms, though "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

So, when dealing with the Internet, is the sense of location and visual identity obsolete? Maybe this sort of interface becomes much more useful if its used as a view vs. a tool for navigation. If I directed a comment towards a certain user, maybe have the character automatically walk over to that person and convey the message. Maybe if the walking is automated we would overcome the tedium of traveling distances in a virtual world? Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.
