Since I don't have a degree in computer, I'm thinking about getting an online degree, but before I spend my money, I'd like to know your opinons, is it worths the money I will spend? And how do employers find it? (a.k.a. Wal2k)

If you can find an employer to pay for, or help you pay for, your education, then go for it. Otherwise, that's a lot of money to pay for attending a diploma mill. FWIW, I thought about doing an MBA online. Before signing up, I talked to some managers that I know at big companies, and they scoffed at the online degrees. Granted, they're MBA snobs because they earned theirs from traditional universities, but a lot of dev managers earned their degrees from traditional universities, too. Take from that what you will. If the university is reputable and you think the many thousands of dollars of investment will pay off in the long run, then by all means, go for it. If, however, you're doing this just to tack a diploma up on your wall, think twice about going into debt over it. If you're going to spend that much money AND you're that concerned about your education, it may well be worth going to a traditional university. Good luck!

I have to agree with Jon. If you want to do a degree online alot of traditional universities offer classes online. I see that more and more now. I do have to say that I felt that taking an online class was not as stimulating for me. I felt that it was easier to slack off and also pass a class with a good grade and not learn anything. I also like the personal interaction rather than doing it over the web, but that is just my preference. As for the material it seems to be the same. Hope this helps :)

I got my MS online from the same college that I got my BS from but 1500 miles from the school. They have been doing distance learning for over 25 years now (probably closer to 30). I know that they have a BS in computer science available online as well as various MS programs. Its a private school so its not cheap. Each MS class was like $4k. But if you can get an employer to pay that would be good. The nice thing is that typically there is a 1 hour phone conference a week per class. Those are not required, but they are a good time to ask the instructors questions. Besides that its just 10 weeks of working your butt off. They are quarter based, not semester based. I only took 2 classes as a time, taught 2 classes at a community college, and worked a fulltime job (24/7 support) all while we had our first kid. Make sure it is a real accredited university. I've heard good things about Phonix from those who attend. Nobody consideres it as good as a real degree, but almost. Do your best to attend class at a real university.

Try The Open University[^] as it specialises in distance learning and have done for as long as I can remember. As I child I used to watch their maths, physics and engineering programmes on TV. I don't remember much from those courses as I was only 5 at the time. But, boy did these guys have crazy crazy ties!
