Software Company vs. non-Software Company

My career has been inside the I.T. departments of non-software companies (manufacturing, specifically). I've always wondered what it would be like to be the profit center of a company, rather than a cost center. Assuming all other attributes are the same (pay, benefits, work enjoyment), what have you noticed are the main differences between working in the software department of a non-software company and working on the development team of a software company? I liked working for software firms because it was a great learning experience compared to a corporate environment. Corporate environments can give you a broader scope of experience but working for software firms give a deeper knowledge or at least that is my experience.
