Hello softworkers, there are some ongoing activities in texas to license software engineers and issue certifications and licenses just like for layers and doctors. Do you think this will have a stand ? Are we all required to attend study classes again ? Will this affect your work and education in the future ? Hey Chris wouldn't this certify for a new poll ? I have no clear opinion if this is getting serious, but if so, I would like to get licensed. The consequences are software engineering would then be considered as a profession, which it is not now. Then a licensed certified developer would be accountable for bugs and harm caused by his work. Is this a good idea ? Has anybody already ready the new book by Steve Maquire ?

I'd have no problem with this. Managers might though. They'd have to then listen to our advice then. They wouldn't be able to rush projects out the door without being fully tested. If we as developers become accountable for bugs/harm etc, then we'd have the final say on when a product could ship. Actually thinking about it, this is probably a bad idea. I would never ship anything, because I'm never happy that my code is good enough :-) Michael :-)

I don't like it. That means we 9as developers) have to pay to maintain our "license". You wanna bet that the tests won't cost an arm and a freakin leg? It will cost employers more for salaries, and that will cause the cost of the software to increase. I live on Texas and I haven't heard of this, but I'm going to fight it if it is indeed a possibility.

as long as software designers and testers would be held to the same standards as the developers, i'm ok with it. -c ------------------------------ Smaller Animals Software, Inc. http://www.smalleranimals.com
