Sorry if there have been postings about this before, I just thought that some of you music-lovers would be interested in this. I've posted my impressions of the allofmp3.com music service on my blog. Short version: I like it a lot, and I think that others who enjoy music will too. (No, I'm not affiliated with them and I'm not astroturfing ;)). Have any of you used it? Do you have any good or bad stories to share?

Technologically it's very impressive. I use relatively high-end earphones with my iPod (Shure e5c[^]) and they really pick up poor recordings, which is why I use Exact Audio Copy when ripping CDs so I can use Lame and get decent audio quality. So the idea that you could purchase tracks off the Internet and determine how you want them encoded is a great idea. Particularly since I wouldn't mind waiting a few hours for it to download provided it sounded good. However, what does concern me is the relatively muddy copyright issues... from what I've read it's effectively legal under russian law (since its considered the same as a radio broadcast), but whether I (as a citizen of the UK) am entitled to receive the "broadcast" and retain it isn't clear (at least to me). I seem to remember their T&Cs effectively saying it's up to me to figure out. -- Paul "Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy. Sorry to hear that, they're one of the best things I've bought for commuting. The e5's are actually pretty comfortable, and they include some foam tips that just cover the ear canal. They're pretty soft and expand to provide the isolation. I've been using in-ear earphones for almost 2 years now so it's quite natural now but they definitely freaked me out when I first got them! -- Paul "Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy. Do they have the "stethoscope" effect ? I bought the sony MDR-EX70LP in-ear earphones and I really don't like them, they have horrible design, and the bad stethoscope effect(*) that makes them pretty much useless in day to day use; and the sound was also bad, no bass, and really, really low level compared to the base apple earbud earphones. (*) like when you rub the cord, you ear the friction in you ear.

The stethoscope effect is normally referred to as Microphonics. The e5s don't, mainly because they loop over the back of your ears. The earphones I had prior (Etymotic ER-4P[^]) were quite prone to it though, so it does depend on the earphone. As for sound, they're excellent. The E5s have a dual-driver design so you get an extremely articulate performance, I initially didn't like them as much as the Etymotic earphones, but I've gotten used to them now and they are awesome. I did have a pair of the Sony's at one point, but never really used to use them. If you're not getting any bass I would imagine you've not had them quite in your ear properly, they are regarded as being quite bass heavy. -- Paul "Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy.
