"Stability. What an interesting concept" - Chris MaunderYeah, it's a huge tragedy the like we haven't seem in a long time, completely shocking to wake up to this morning. One geophycist in Italy claimed that it was so strong that the "whole earth rang like a bell" and it actually had an effect easily seen everywhere on the planet with seismic devices. Strongest earthquake anywhere in the world in over 40 years. Over 11,000 (conservatively) confirmed dead so far all around the Indian ocean basin and rising according to the BBC. For some wierd reason CNN doesn't seem to think it's worth reporting on so I doubt most Americans have a clue just how bad this is. I've been flipping channels all morning and none of the U.S. ones have any information really at all about it but all the Canadian news channels and the BBC are reporting almost exclusively on it. CNN didn't mention it all this morning for hours and then finally when they did it was a little 30 second blurb about it then moving on to concentrate on what (apparently) they believe Americans *really* care about which is flight delays and dead football players. And they call themselves the most trusted name in news, a poor joke at times like this. I really wonder sometimes...oh well, soapbox material I guess. Hopefully the death toll doesn't rise more, the red cross is taking donations now for it: http://www.icrc.org[^] [wow, a vot of 2...for *this*? Either there are a lot of CNN loving people out there or any mention of the word American without Eagle or Pride just gets an automatic 1 regardless of content. That's part of the reason Fox is dominating them in the ratings. They have covered it heavily. Why would anyone waste time arguing with an accountant about anything? Their sole function is to record what happenned, and any higher aspirations are mere delusions of grandeur. On the ladder of productive contributions they are the little rubber pads at the bottom that keep the thing from sliding out from under you. - Roger Wright

If it was not for the internet I would never hear about much of anything is my guess. I cannot even imagine the loss. Losing 11000 lives is unbelivable not to mention the loss of homes, jobs and families being broken up. I sure hope emergency aid orgainizations are getting mobilized and ready to go. I will probably need to stop by and donate a little blood this week they will be hitting the supplies pretty hard.

"Stability. What an interesting concept" - Chris Maunderhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4125619.stm[^] " Tsunami has caused an inconceivable damage in Sri Lanka. Extent of the damage can be visualised by the following facts - a train with 1500 passengers has washed away, all passengers missing, buses are seen floating in deep sea with no clue of the passengers on board, some villages, hotels and markets have washed away leaving no traces. " Harshana Somapriya, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka I've been tracking the news since about 7:30 GMT when my father came in and told me what happened. I spoke to my sister yesterday - she is travelling around the world and flew into Sri Lanka on the 22nd to go treking with a group she's with before heading off to South America in the new year. She has just sent us en e-mail from an Internet café in the capital to tell us she is safe, but the hostel they were going to be staying at in Matara had been damaged and they were not allowed back so she has nothing but her day pack and some money which she has spent on the café and bought some bottled water and food. Her passport and plane ticket out of there are at the hostel so she is going to try and find a British Consulate and report it. She says that when she left everywhere was in total chaos with people and water everywhere and people were breaking into cars and buildings and smashing everything even in the water. The police came quickly and they were very good at trying to organise things, but it is still very surreal. She went to the capital on a bus with all but two people from her group at their request (that is where she is now). They couldn't take the train because the railway had 'gone'. They had about five seconds warning to run away from their vehicles before the water came up, they knew something was happening, it went up to their waists and they managed to hold on to each other as the force wasn't too great. She is worried about her missing friends, but thinks they were seperated after the confusion started and asked them to e-mail her. Her group is going to stay at another hostel just outside the city where we had phoned her yesterday so we know she is safe and where she is. Not that that brings a lot of comfort, but I guess that is expected when the media is covering this like 11/9/01 and you have loved ones caught up in the middle of it. I have been in a bad flood before wh

Unfortunately that 11,000 figure must be very conservative, as it was such a massive wave (over 10 meters) and its a densly populated area. "Stability. What an interesting concept" - Chris MaunderI am in Chennai/Madras in India. Yesterday morning, I felt the quake as I was sitting in front of the computer but thought nothing of it. I thought I was swaying so I must have a neurological problem and that I should see a doctor if I got the same feeling again! Later on, I heard that there was an earthquake and was told that the fishermen who live in hits close to the sea have had to evacuate. Around 10 in the morning, I went to the beach to see what was happening. There was a huge crowd and the police were controlling access to the area. I could see that the water had risen to cover a couple of hundred feet of the beach (width-wise, not length-wise) and that the water had once actually reached the road skirting the beach. Still there was seemingly nothing out of the ordinary except for the raging sea and the angry waves. I evacuated my relatives who live close to the sea while commenting that a 20-foot wave would swamp most of Chennai as there is no high ground in this coastal city and so my evacuation effort would be futile in case of a 20-foot wave. When I turned on the TV news, I could hardly believe my eyes and ears. Just 5 miles north of where I live, about 100 persons had died. Reports on death and destruction continued to pour in all day. A horrific incident that is too hard to contemplate. It seems there were 6 earthquakes in the 6.3 range in the Andaman-Nicobar islands following the 8.9 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. I thought the west coast of India would not be affected but I was wrong. About 30 persons had died in Quilon/Allepey area in the quiet and picturesque backwaters of Kerala. The entire east coast of India from West Bengal in the Northeast to Tamil Nadu in the South has been affected. This morning, I still can't believe how lucky I have been to avoid any consequences when death and destruction were hardly a mile away.

Hmm... well that's the problem right there -- TV sucks. Use the Internet for news. :) Let's hope those people in need are able to recover quickly. Jeremy Falcon

"Stability. What an interesting concept" - Chris MaunderOver 23,000 confirmed dead now. Sri Lanka: 11,000 dead Indonesia: 4,500 dead India: 3,500 dead Thailand: 839 dead Malaysia: 44 dead Maldives: 32 dead Burma: 30 dead Bangladesh: 2 dead Bangladesh: 2 dead There will be more - the biggest numbers are still estimates as there are too many bodies coming in to count. We have spoken to my sister again and she is returning to Australia with friends as soon as they can get a flight. They are going to pay for her, and from there she is going to come back to the UK. (I don't know how.) She heard from her two missing friends overnight - they made it to the capital safely too and phoned the hostel they had stayed at before where the rest of the group had gone back yesterday. We won't feel any less anxious until she is well away from there - the death toll is rising and it's not the safest part of the world for single British women let alone in times like these. I guess she won't be going on to the Maldives now. :rose:
