Turn it off or leave it on?

How about a quick Lounge Poll™ ? At the end of the work day - do you power your work/office PC off completely or "Restart/LogOff" and leave it powered on? For those that leave it powered on... why? 1. PC performs tasks after hours (utilities, updates, virus scans, etc...). 2. Second shift user needs it on. 3. Leaving it on is "easier" on the components and I want this baby to last forever. 4. Leaving it on is "harder" on the components and I want a new PC. 5. Saves valuable time in the morning. 6. Auto-power-off doesn't work on my PC and I can't wait for the bloody message telling me it's OK to power-off. "Reality is what refuses to go away when I stop believing in it." Philip K. Dick

I suspect there is a little truth in each and that it varys by component type. Acceleration/deceleration vs. sustained heat and RF exposure. Left on, for two reasons 1) Network virus scans and more importantly 2) We use Incredibuild, so any idle computer helps reduce everyone else's build times But I did read somewhere that turning on is the biggest strain on a PC, and that when PCs are left on for long periods (big server farms, etc), it's fairly common for machines to refuse to come back on after a powercut. I power it off when I leave, and turn it back on when I arrive next day. I leave it on all the time so I can connect to it from home using remote desktop, and it also does virus scans and folding@home during the night hours. :) Rado

We're supposed to turn them off to save power bills, but I recently got VPN capabilty to tunnel into our network from my cable connection at home, so now I leave it on so I can remote to it. I do turn off the monitor, however. 'til next we type... HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse

Leave it on. That way, everything is right where I left it and I don't have to remember what files and what line numbers I was working on the day before. onwards and upwards...

Powered On: 1) yes, anti-virus, software & OS updates, security scans 4) shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... 5) you obviously haven't tried to logon to a network that includes dozens of locations in the southwest region... mostly because we have to (scans above) by site decree. I used to turn it off, mostly because my system runs hot (highest end processors and graphics cards). I don't expect the system to fail, per se. I've heard all the arguments on the PC on/off, and agree with both sides really. I've seen as many power-on/off switches fail over the years as I have seen components overheat. However, one additional note: even our machines don't have filtered air. Without filtered air, dust is blown through components constantly, clog fans (including GPU and CPU fans) which requires a good blast of canned air once in a while or you risk loosing it all when the fans go.... oh wait, we aren't allowed to bring in the canned air.... :rolleyes: my home computer gets better care, with less expensive components, mostly because I have the freedom to do the maintenance required to keep it in working order. It runs only when I am home, only because of energy conservation. When I get a place of my own I intend to set a computer room with the machines running 24 hrs, with filters on all the fans and a well made case for airflow (doesn't pull air in through the 3.5" drive and CDrom). _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I leave it on so I can access it from my house and edit/modify/create code when the muse strikes. Set up my laptop on the patio - get a beverage of choice ( usually coffee ) - log on via wifi - do all the little things I was gonna do during the day but got sidetracked. Life is sweet.
