Freeware Zip Utilities

My programs at school are getting a lot bigger, and we have to zip them and submit Has anyone had any experience with any of the free zip utilities? Also I am using XP Pro if that matters

Doesn't XP have Zip built in? Go to a folder, select several files, right click and select 'Send To' & 'Compressed Folder' Steve

Maybe I should rephrase this--That I am aware of the Zip that comes with XP is a shareware version of WinZip, mine has expired and I don't like using it And I have found several Free zips on the web and downloaded them All I am asking is has anyone acutually tried any of the freeware zip utilities or know someone who has used any of them Thanks Paul

I turned off the XP Zip support ages ago because it's so slow, but I can remember that it's not like Winzip. As for freeware tools, try this[^] or this[^]. They are both freeware tools that can make archives that WinZip can open. Yes, they're command-line, but that's not the end of the world :). I've tried them both and they work fine. I'll second Bruce's suggestion for 7-zip. I use it all the time and love it. :)

Sounds probable The problem with WinZip is that it kinda overrides all the built in XP functionality - just install WinZip and the XP stuff should work again :) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Phoenix Paint - back from DPaint's ashes!

I have been using IZArc for sometimes now, and had never faced any problems. The interface is really nice.
I prefer IZArc too. It gives you the ability to view zipped directory structures when double clicking on the zip file.

One 'problem' with RAR is that AV sofrware does not scan inside it... See Here
I use WinRAR for everything anyway... it quick and does not have the annoying WinZip 'issue' of when you want to move the window it deciding that means you want to abort. :mad: (Also as I am Win2K user and not a WinXP-er I don't have build-in ZIP file support, not that I would use it anyway... it seem very slow even on a dual processor PC I use at work.
