MythTV PVR?
-
Has anyone built their own PVR using MythTV's[^] software and a video capture card? Between the video capture card purchase and new hard drive (200gb+), I'm wondering if its cost effective to go this route? At least there wouldn't be any subscription fees. All I can say is that I have been struggling to get it running for weeks now. Too much junk included, and too many dependancies. If you do get it going, can you send me some tips please :P xacc-ide 0.0.15 now with C#, MSIL, C, XML, ASP.NET, Nemerle, MyXaml and HLSL coloring - Screenshots

I was tempted to go that way, but I was daunted by all the seemingly complex hardware/software dependancies. I went a different route. I put together my own PC and installed an ATI All-In-Wonder video capture card. Instead of top of the line, I got a 9000 Radeon for under $200 and put it into a P4 based Soyo board with a 120GB drive and DVD-burner. The ATI card comes with all the TV recording software that you will need and for the most part, works straight out of the box. I ended up purchasing video editting and DVD burning software for around $50 a piece. :) You know that MacGyver DVD box set that just came out a month ago. Well I already have the complete first season burned and about 65% of the rest of the series. I'm in the middle of doing Magnum PI and have a few other fav's that I'll be recording and burning for my own video library. :) I have a VHS recorder also hooked up to the card, but I haven't tried to record any tapes yet. My wife and I have hours of tapes of old shows and home movies that I may transfer to DVD sometime. Chris Meech I am Canadian. Nah, I just pay $10/mth to my cable company and no hardware to buy. Works great, easy to use software, periodic updates to software, around 30 hrs recording time. This is one service I'm very happy paying for. :) BW

I recently bought a Hauppauge PVR-250 for $150USD and a Toshiba DVD recorder for $99USD and put them in my existing 1.2Ghz computer. The tuner came with all the sofware for PVR (recording, freeze live TV, scheduled recording) and editing for burning DVDs. The editing software is by uLead and is really excellent. It's not a eye-popping UI like Tivo or Media Center, but it sure gets the job done. For a mere 250 clams I'm really pleased. QRZ? de WAØTTN

If you are looking for open source windows based HTPC / PVR software. There is also MediaPortal mediaportal.sourceforge.net... Still in early stages and using managed DirectShow.NET X| For those of you in the rest of the world with DVB-T based DTV systems (rather than ATSC) There is also WebScheduler and DigitalWatch http://forums.dvbowners.com/index.php?showforum=14[^]
