I had the first sitting of a root canal treatment at the dentists and it wasn’t memorable at all :-( I should have done this 5 months back, but then I got scared by some of the comments I got from the Lounge regarding root canal treatment and decided on a temporary filling. I’ve got my second sitting this Sunday and the mere thought of it makes me shiver all over. Dentists will feature in my nightmares for the next few weeks I guess :^) Nish :((

I had a root canal done about 11 years ago - the pain leading up to it was horrible. The worst part of all was I had just moved to a new city, was between jobs, didn't have a dentist... it was a leap of faith to pick someone and he did a good job. I'm still going to that same dentist today. A good dentist is a very good thing. I grew up with a bad one and hated dentists for years because of it!

I feel your pain, Nish. I've been deathly afraid of dentists since about the age of 10. In the last 30 years, I've sat in a dentist's chair twice. Fortunately I still have all my teeth, including four wisdom teeth, and I don't have any problems. Whether I've chosen to ignore any problems or none have ever visited me, I don't know. Although all my family have been telling me for twenty years, that in ten years, all my teeth are going to fall out. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] Gently arching his fishing rod back he moves the tip forward in a gentle arch releasing the line.... kersplunk [Doug Goulden] Nice sig! Dentists are #1 in my book. :) Then again I am a sick person. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

5 years ago I had it done without pain relievers - by some old dentist who does not believe in them. Now, that was an experience I don't want to repeat. On the other hand, I had another root canal two years ago with pain relievers, and it was easy :)

Bah! Dentists are supposed to cause a lot of pain - it is natures way of making your learn to care for your teeth. Having said that, sometime in the not too distant future I am going to have to have one of my wisdom teeth out. I have the same problem my father had - the one on the top right is growing upwards into my ear instead of down into my mouth. I can actually feel it inside my ear with my little finger, and it is very slowly making me deaf. :(

I have had several over the years. Provided the dentist gives you enough anaesthetic, they aren't a big deal. Years ago I had one done by a dentist who didn't give me any anaesthetic (I am not talking about the initial visit where the root was killed; I am talking about subsequent visits where the root canal was cleaned out and filled). This was a very bad experience. But as long as you get an injection to numb the area, it is not a problem. John Carson Q: How many Bush Administration officials does it take to replace a light bulb? A: None. As the President and Secretary Rumsfeld have made clear, the light bulb is doing a great job and we and our coalition allies are encouraged by the progress it is making. Mike Carlton

I've always felt they were hurting me on purpose ! I've some major work to be done in the next year or so. One of my front teeth is artificial and was 'rejected' by my body some 2 years ago and has been hanging onto the root for dear life. I'll need a new implant. I'm putting that off as long as I can "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

I can't say that I hate going to the dentist...I just dislike it very much. It is inconvenient, but the part I dislike the most is the inevitable lecture I get from the hygienist about the merits of flossing. So I only go maybe one every 5 years or so. I am 45 years old and have never had a cavity...I doubt that even the hygienist can say that. :) Gary Kirkham Forever Forgiven and Alive in the Spirit He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. - Jim Elliot Me blog, You read

I've always felt they were hurting me on purpose ! I felt that too, until I developed this strategy: Just before the dentist thrusts his implements of torture into your mouth reach out and take a firm but gentle hold of his family jewels, look him directly in the eye and say "Now we're not going to hurt each other, are we?" ;) Steve T

My sister is a dentist. She confessed that at time her friends and her would sometimes intentionally 'poke' lascivious patients to make them look the other way. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."
