My wife and I taking a holiday in France this year. We are getting the boat to St Malo in France, and driving down to a place called St Gilles Croix de Vie just north of La Rochelle. Does anyone know any places within reasonable distance that we could visit. I notice we'll be reasonably close to the Bordeaux area, which is good as we like our food and alcohol! I'm a typical Englishman and can't speak any foreign languages, but fortunately my wife is fluent in French so I think she'll be doing most of the talking. :-O

I suggest you have a look to Michelin's green guides[^], which are very good. Noirmoutier Island, Nantes, La Rochelle are nice places to visit. Don't worry about food and alcohol, every French region has its own specialties (Vendée is known for Muscadet[^], brioche and ham) Jeremy Davis wrote: I'm a typical Englishman and can't speak any foreign languages Don't mention about Joan d'Arc, Fachoda or Waterloo, and everything should be fine :-D;)

We normally travel from town to town making sure there are some Michelin Rouge places to visit. It's great now that you can get a PocketPC version - no more lugging a thick book around. I'll have a look at these Michelin Green books. Thanks

My pleasure :) There's a web version of the green guides through http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/Tourism[^]. It requires free registration, I've never teested it, but maybe it might help.

Hi Jerry, There are many cool places around there. I would recommend: - Rochefort south of La Rochelle. Especially the Corderie Royale and the Hermione. The Hermione was the boat that was used by Lafayette in 1870. They are currently rebuilding the boat as it was. See http://www.corderie-royale.com/ - Le Marais Poitevin. You can rent a small boat and navigate See http://www.parc-marais-poitevin.fr/ - Aquarium de La Rochelle http://www.aquarium-larochelle.com/ - Ile Noirmoutier and especially le passage du Gois At high tide, the road is replaced by the see. Be careful not to be caught there or you'll have to forget about the car (this really happens every year !). And trust me, it's not only a few inches of water. That's some of the few places coming to my mind. I'll just add that Cognac is closer from La Rochelle than Bordeaux ;-) Enjoy your stay ! Cheers Jean-François
