Scary driving

Well, I was stopped at a red light, and a car was in front of me. Now, this light has a separate light for those turning left. The left arrow light turned green, but our light was still red. The left light for traffic coming the other direction is also (presumably) green, as they started going. And sure enough, the guy in front of me (we're NOT in the left turn lane) starts to go straight! I just wathced in horror, fortunately he stopped before he got far enough into the intersection to hit any oncoming traffic. It made me think, is there anything I could have done in that situation? The other driver was an elderly man, I was afriad honking might cause him to keep going (it's common, although a little rude, around here to honk of the light turns green and the driver in front of you doesn't go.) Or was just watching and hoping for the best about all I could do? The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

Give him a nudge and put an end to his inattentive driving.;P "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

Navin wrote: It made me think, is there anything I could have done in that situation? The other driver was an elderly man, You can go down this train of thought forever and not get anywhere. You cannot save everyone. Since you cannot step into the other persons shoes, you cannot know the reaction. Being behind the person, you have far fewer options. Unless he happens to be looking in the mirror, or looking back, he is not going to notice waving, or blinking lights or anything visual. That leaves auditory... of which you are limited to horn and shouting. If the windows are up, shouting is useless. Honking has become a tool of the impatient instead of warning. Which is bad, because as you said, it could easily encourage him to continue without looking instead of accepting it as a warning. Stop, take a deep breath and know that there really was nothing you could do. This is not a bad thing, it just "is." You cannot save everyone from their own mistakes, the shock may make him consider paying more attention, or consider other transportation at times. That is his decision, and nothing you could have done will change that, nor make it easier. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. That was my first thought too. Of course you could quickly find yourself on the receiving end of a whiplash litigation. In this case it's not likely to be an injury accident if all the vehicles are just starting to move away from red lights. Just let him go and let the other drivers sort our the lawsuits. Steve T

Get down from your vehicle and shoot him three times. If you have a good aim, he will stop. :-D I see dead pixels Yes, even I am blogging now!

That reminds me of when I hired a car in Denver, Colorado back in April 1999. I asked the person at the hire car company about the rules for a 4-way stop sign as we don't have anything like that here and I was really confused the last time I was in the US. She said that the rules in Colorado were really simple: Who ever has the largest gun rack has the right of way.

You could have pushed his car further into the intersection. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. Navin wrote: the guy in front of me (we're NOT in the left turn lane) starts to go straight! hehe. I did that a couple weeks ago. I think it was the first time in 20+ years of driving I've done that. The guy on my left started to go (he had the green left arrow) and I, not even paying attention to the light, went also! What a moron. First off, I never go just because the other drivers go--all too often I've seen someone blowing through a red light, almost crushing some eager beaver who guns it when the light turns green without checking that no one is entering into the intersection. It was just plain stupidity on my part. Occasionally, stupid things happen. That's why they're called "accidents" rather than "planned collisions". Frankly, any accident would have been pretty low impact, I would imagine. I don't think it merits the emotion of "horror". And certainly beeping your horn would have been the WRONG thing to do. The guy would have looked in his mirror, not straight ahead, and probably missed the fact that he was heading into another car! Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing YAPO
