I am working on a couple of articles for CP right now, but I am also considering writing a book on the same topic. If, and these are big ifs, I do tackle writing a book and if a publisher is interested, will there be any legal or copyright issue with the articles already being posted on CP? Jeff Martin My Blog

The articles are copyright by yourself, posted or not posted shouldn't make any difference there. But I think you should consider asking the publisher if they allow it. Don't try it, just do it! ;-)

Shouldn't apply in your case but the MathWorld[^] saga is an interesting read on the dangers of publishing your own web-content. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

You have the copyright so it's yours to do with as you please. We don't enforce exclusivity in article postings but many a publication does. However, once you publish an article on the web it's out there. Alexa's way-way-back machine has it for all to see, Google caches it for all to see, and tens of thousands of people download it, print it, save it to their HDDs and pass it around. By posting it you are essentially giving us the rights to perpetually display it, regardless of whether we have subsequently removed it or not. There's also the philosophical angle to this: are you writing an article to get paid for it, or are you writing an article to help as many people as you can. Finally, if you are writing a book then usually publishers love having chapters from that book posted on CodeProject if they can have a link back to the book on Amazon etc. You get to share your knowledge with everyone here, publishers get to make a book and get a ton of free advertising, and everyone's happy. cheers, Chris Maunder

That had to be one of the saddest stories about justice I have ever read. And another fine example of morons. Regardz Colin J Davies The most LinkedIn CPian (that I know of anyhow) :-)

Thanks for the link. Interesting read. 1) Why did Eric and Wolfram settle instead of fighting the injunction ? About the Author Agreement document. 2) The total copyright transfer clause is not hidden somewhere deep in the document. It is right there , the very first sentence in Item 5. There is no legal mumbo jumbo either. Is it possible that Eric Weisstein just rushed into the contract ?

Michael supplied the link, but I had read the story ages ago. I use mathworld religiously. :-) 1. I think Eric and Wolfram realised that legally they were screwed. 2. Yeah I think eric didn't think about what he was reading, ad its implications. Regardz Colin J Davies The most LinkedIn CPian (that I know of anyhow) :-)

It would be a good idea to discuss this with the publisher. It maybe that they can see something positive about the article being on CP (say a mention of the book ?). Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Most publishers will not allow you to use material that is already publicly available. Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group Programmer Trainer and Mentor and Project Management Consultant
