A friend of mine just had his company name stripped from him in a legal dispute. He's scrambling to pick another name. I'm a programmer, not a branding expert. Anyone have some good places to get started with getting a new name? Because he is flying solo, he doesn't have a huge budget to pay a creative agency. How important is it for a small company of 2-3 devs to have a sweet name? Does it really make any difference?

Imho, it's pretty important - but more as the company becomes successful. For now, your friend can use a working name (most early stage companies do). When it comes time to pick a name, make sure it conveys the appropriate emotion. And of course, ensure a closely matching domain name is available. /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Articles | Freeware | Music ravib@ravib.com

Have him write a program that picks two random words from a dictionary and jams them together. Even if he doesn't find a suitable name, he'll find some entertaining combinations. :-D

A lesson I learnt too late Make sure the company name is something that you can say easily over the phone without having to repeat it, or spell it to the person on the other end of the line. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

Product names are far more important than company names and having been someone facing this exact same problem with a product name many years ago there is no substitute for a trademark lawyer and a proper name check. Anyone unwilling to pay for this is really indicating they are not serious about their business and deserves whatever happens to them.

I sometimes have this *little* problem also. :( But it's not easy finding free domain names these days. -- LuisR

For about $100 - $200 he could sponsor a corporate naming contest on www.worth1000.com[^] (see corporate links on right hand side) For that he will get about 30-70 very creative minds coming up with suggestions. The prize amount is entirely up to the sponsor but prizes of $100 or higher tend to attract more entrants, and higher quality entries. Steve T

This moving company's truck is eye-catching when I see it driving down the road. Perhaps he could go with something like: 3 guys and a computer 3 guys and a mouse 3 guys and a compiler ...
