I certainly can't find squat here in LA. At least, not in parts of the city that I want to live in. :(( --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ #include "witty_sig.h" your :bob: with :vegemite: and

Me? Whine? That's Nish. ;) A NZ job would be way cool. I've never been off North America (well, except 1 week in Hawaii) and I'd always be pretty near a beach. :-D As for what I've been doing... I'm doing some freelance work now for a company in Denmark (one of the owners saw my articles here and contacted me). The pinball scene is pretty barren these days, unfortunately. :(( --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ #include "witty_sig.h" your :bob: with :vegemite: and

Me? Whine? That's Nish. oh I meant wine the liquid stuff. A NZ job would be way cool. Hey thats not what you said last time. Anyhow that business went belly up so you missed out on a fat redundacy check Michael, (I know you collect them):-) Anyhow my current project VMTU (have you heard of it) Just runs and with almost 3000 beta testers now, I think I can considering going commercial with it with no real changes needed. :-) Anyhow I might have some other work coming in Michael, thats far to complex for me since I'm really a Newbie at coding etc, So who knows maybe I could pass it off to you. Nothing ventured, Nothing gained. Anyhow if you are serious can you send me your CV as I can't find it at inreach, and who knows I might be able to put it in the right hands. So you can leave Sunny California! [No promises Mike] :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

Part of the problem is finding someone that's willing to interview you. Many companies use screening agencies (head-hunters), so that they don't have to spend time reviewing resumes and then interviewing so many unqualified candidates. This means they rarely post ads in the paper. It's almost impossible to get a job anymore in the states without going thru one of these head-hunters first. My brother got laid off in San Francisco, couldn't find work, moved back to Phoenix, couldn't find work, and moved back to San Diego, and couldn't find work. He called the other night and mentioned something about finding a job on Johnston Island in the South Pacific, and if they offer him the job, he's gonna take it. I got damn lucky here in San Antonio. The company that hired me *did* place an ad in the Sunday paper. I emailed my resume on Monday morning, interviewed on Tuesday, and was hired on Thursday. Um, you'll want to verify this, but I heard like on the radio eh that DND was recruiting high tech types big time. Offering 10,000CDN signing bonuses to recent tech grads and up to 20,000 for experienced people. And, there's probably some activity happening on the west coast, though you might get sent to the QCIs. Not a bad thing if you're the outdoorsy type, I hear. Downside is probably salary. DND not known for its mega buck outlay in this area. I guess the thing is that DND has invested (and is still) in some pretty nifty technology and now needs some people to maintain it. Again, this is just something from a snippet off CBC1. But hey, a jobs a job, right? Might want to check it out.

yeah that seems to be the biggest problem I've been having. I guess I need to start tailoring my resume more to the head hunters. Of course I have no idea what they want to see....I know they don't like my resume though.

I guess I need to start tailoring my resume more to the head hunters. Yeah you have to make it glossy, Jacksonh. Head hunters and HR Depts shortlist on who has the best looking CV or Resumme, they know nothing about codeworkers etc or what really happens they suck big time. If you don't make it on a shortlist, you'll never get a job. Many successful resumees are full of BS, consequentially the shortlist, isn't for the best coders, But those who had the "glossiest" resumees. I'm not going to tell you to BS your resumee, but I think it will sure help! Best of luck Jacksonh. Regardz Colin J Davies

AAARRRGGGHHH!!! I hate head-hunters, staffing firms, and HR. It's a wall of blithering idiots between us us and and the industry. If you can get past them you'll probably do alright. I had one call me last week and ask me if I had experience with the "Visual Basic compiler". When I said there was no such thing since its interpreted he told me I didn't have the qualifications he was looking for. I hope him and his family step in front of a fast moving bus. Die HR DIE!!! I don't know if the same is true over there, but in the UK most companies use recruitment agencies heavily - it saves then the bother of advertising themselves. Last time I moved jobs I emailed by CV to 24 recruitment agencies (you soon find out which ones are serious) and as a result I was able to be real selective about which ones I persued. I accepted 2 interviews, got 2 offers and chose the one I preferred. :-D Good luck. Andy Metcalfe - Sonardyne International Ltd

Don't *EVER* BS on your resume. It shows a lack of integrity, and just puts managers off the direct hire process even more (forcing them into the pre-screen mode), and that that hurts ALL of the other programmers that come after you. I worked as a contract programmer for Maxim Group for a year. When it came time for my first contract to end, they started looking for more work for me. They *CONSTANTLY* pressured me to lie on my resume by saying I had VB experience. I don't have any VB experience, and I don't want any, and I wasn't about to say that I did on my resume. Yeah on reflection I shouldn't have added that last line to my post John. With every thing else you have stated I agree, The real problem are these Headhunters and recruiters and HR departments, That have a checkbox system. Actually my problem with my resumee / CV is that I have to tone it down as if I state the truth, it appears impossible to believe. And I get told I am way over-qualified etc, whilst I still can't use a debugger etc. I suppose thats why I'm forced to be self employed John, And the fact my humor at times irritates people.
