This is unique for Indian political and judicial system ... HC* asks Sena1-BJP2 to pay Rs 20 lakh each for bandh[^] Ofcourse the Hartals/bandhs are conducted by all political parties. We can only hope this is used as precedent to punish erring outfits in future. *--High Court--it's the states highest court. 1,2---Right wing Indian political parties Regards,
Agni.Good news. The Kerala HC should fine the BJP a couple of crores (20 million rupees) for yesterday's Hartal!

20 lakh== 20,00,000 50 crore==50,00,00,000 A lakh is 100 thousand,A crore is 10 million. The nomenclature is uniquely Indian. Ofcourse the damages awarded are a pittance compared to actual loss, but it is a start. Regards, Agni

One issue is that unless someone high profile is involved, the case may not get anywhere. Another issue is that of security - our security I mean. But it's definitely something I want to do in future. I am not settled in life right now, in fact it's very much the opposite now; but once I have got my balance-in-life right, I intend to do something about this.

Turtle Hand wrote: So what's a Hartal? It's boycott. Opposition parties are opposing the rate increase of fuel prices[^]. From Google: "Har" means "everything" or "always"; "Tal" or "tala" means "to close". Hartal originally a Gujarati expression signifying closing down of shops and warehouses with the object of realising a demand. Though essentially a mercantile practice, hartal acquired political significance in the 1920s and 1930s when MK Gandhi, the Indian national leader from Gujarat, institutionalised it by organising a series of anti-British general strikes by the name 'hartal'. In Bangladesh, hartal is a constitutionally recognised political method for articulating any political demand.

Agni.Indian political parties will never change. There is no goddamn fear. We need military system for atleast 50 years. India plagued by 'P' syndrome. (Politicians, Population, Poverty and Pollution). This is not my quote, I read it somewhere. If we can fix the 'Politicians', then all the issues will disappear. :sigh: Sometimes I feel like I should start something like in 'Hindustani'(Hindi) movie or 'Tagore' (telugu)/ 'Ramana' (Tamil) movie.

Hmm... that's interesting. I knew that billion was used to refer to 10^12, but I thought it was a thing of the past. Thanks for the link. I equate a billion to 10^9, and prefer it to the Indian system which groups the last three digits together and all preceding digits in groups of 2. For instance, 12,34,456. And of course, the face that hardly anybody outside the Indian subcontinent knows what a lakh or a crore is. Cheers, Vikram.
