Chris Maunder wrote: everyone knows killer penguins will do away with us way before the seas fizz away I'm working on an algorithm to visually detect the killer penguins from their friendlier counterparts. I've noted their eyes are closer together and they walk more like john wayne and less like charlie chaplin. Through repeated analysis and a new budget grant, I'll gladly help prevent the scurge of killer penguins. ;) they also seem to be easily distracted by VB, I don't know why.... _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Jeffry J. Brickley wrote: their eyes are closer together and they walk more like john wayne and less like charlie chaplin I've been working on breeding those traits out of them, and have had some excellent results. Rev 6.2005.15 looks particularly good, with the Charlie Chaplin walk, the innocent-looking eyes, and the four-inch venomous fangs inside the tiny beak. I'm still feeding them fish, but in rev 6.2005.19 I'm planning to switch their diet to red meat - pork specifically. That should make them more human-selective, as we're known as "long pig" in cannibal societies. A few comments: - This belongs in the soapbox - Your message title conveys no informaion about the subject matter. - Where is a link to the original work? - Was the original work published in a peer reviewed journal? -RANT_ON- It's this type of inflamatory crap passing as scientific reporting that's turned me off from the whole global warming debate. Dire warnings and proclamations of doom don't impress, well researched data published in peer reviewed journals does. I haven't seen any of the global climate simulations run regression analysis on known climatic data. Verify your models and show me the results, then I'll take them seriously. Krakatoa blew 1 cubic mile of dust into the upper atmosphere, along with unknown quantities of CO2 and SO2, dropping the global temperature 1.2C. http://www.drgeorgepc.com/Vocano1883Krakatoa.html[^] This didn't trigger an ice age or a great die off. Instead the weather returned to normal over the course of 5 or 10 years. Please explain why an island being blown off the map doesn't have any long term effects, while a very slight increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration will lead to disaster (historic levels are 200-300 ppm, the current level is 350 ppm) http://www.cnie.org/pop/CO2/intro.htm[^] http://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov/trends/co2/vostok.htm[^] Yes, we may be entering a period of warming. Yes, their will be climatic change - there always is. That doesn't mean the world is coming to an end. -RANT OFF-

"End is nigh" T-shits, hats and banners - now 50% off.

Im sorry. I thought New Scientist was a reputable publication. Obviously not nearly so informed as you. I googled for your name in the world's scientist lists but couldn't find you there. Maybe you should contact them because obviously you should be there being so brilliant and all.

Have you been a rude, name-calling idiot all your life, or is this a recent development? If the latter, I'm fairly sure that there's a 12-step program for people who suffer from whatever ailment you've acquired. If the former, you provide a strong argument in favor of post-natal abortion. Thank you. Casting aspersions on the beliefs of others by providing carefully selected, poorly supported references, then making personal attacks on those who disagree rather than providing logical, reasoned responses, is the mark of an ignorant imbecile. There is no excuse for such behavior among professionals, though I'm painfully aware that such exchanges occur all the time. We are a community of professionals, and if you can't participate in an appropriate manner, you are cordially invited to find another venue for your childish responses. We welcome reasoned discourse, and even have a forum devoted to such endeavors - It's called the Soapbox. But even there, such infantile responses are not respected, as is entirely proper and appropriate. Go away - shoo, shoo... We'd appreciate it if you don't reproduce, but that's a lot to hope for; your kind usually does. "...putting all your eggs in one basket along with your bowling ball and gym clothes only gets you scrambled eggs and an extra laundry day... Obviously not nearly so informed as you. speaking as someone who has been reading the New Scientist magazine for years i can say that this is the wrong statement to make. they publish reports, and try to make sensible comments about them, to put them in context. you need to be aware of the basis of the reports published, the amount of evidence behind them, and also to read the follow up letters. i still remember a very interesting article many years ago on crop circles. it sounded sensible and reasonable and made sense to me, an intelligent reader who knew very little about the science involved. in the follow up letters it was ripped to shreds by people who did know about the science involved. so you cannot simply state "one report was published in this magazine, therefore it is fact, and all must bow before it". are humans messing around with the climate and the eco system? i think it is safe to say yes. do we know exactly what will happen as a result? no. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness
