The joys of being 5 feet from the server...

After spending many, many months running the site through a pair of copper lines 15,000 km from the servers, being mere feet away is so nice. Just thought I'd share that with you all :D cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

Yes, you can always go over and hug them, or just sit down and listen to their hummings...

Remote administration is where Unix/Linux has a big PLUS over Windows machines. Like my company has it's hosting servers in SFO. They are all running Linux. We badly wanted to keep a Win2K machine there, but since it's almost impossible to do anyting remotely, we gave it up. With Linux we can do anything once we have a shell, including upgrading the kernel, rebooting etc. With Win2K, just imagine what we'd do if we wanted to apply a service pack? Or say we want to install .NET or whatever. I know MS has some remote admin features in XP, but I am not sure they match those of Linux. Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain

In the TS client, you can set the resolution of your virtual screen, so setting it to VGA (640x480x16 colors) would help. You'd have the TS server running on a 2K server, then install the TS client on your workstation (2K pro). --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ While I can't be correct on all matters, I can make the reassuring claim that where I am inaccurate, I am at least definitively inaccurate. your :bob: with :vegemite: and  Sonork - 100.10414 AcidHelm

Terminal server works fine with 1024*768 through a 64Kb ISDN Line. Right now I remote control my work machine, actually working in VC on it, running 1600*1200 and 16bit colors. Ok, I have an ADSL connection, but it works great :) - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

I used NetMeeting (via VPN) to run a remote analysis/repair on our SourceSafe database one Sunday a few weeks back... I didn't have any problems (apart from our youngest "discovering" the poswer switch on the PC with the cable modem attached  ). If you need to hook up to a workstation rather than a server (NT 4.0 in this case - it was our Build PC), NetMeeting is a worthwhile alternative. :) Andy Metcalfe - Sonardyne International Ltd
