New Computer
-
I am about to buy a new machine for my home. Obviously the Laptop/Desktop thoughts came. The purposes of this machine are the following 1) Be my primary development machine when I am at home. I have another laptop (HP nc6000) with 1GB RAM (which I am excusively use for my work related things) 2) Install all the Beta products for evaluation purpose. I will use Virtual PC images for such things. 3) Do some things like digital photo/video editing(not serious stuff) I was thinking of buying some dell laptops with widescreen display and now got attracted to to the Pentium D (dual core) based machines. Also the Athlon64 based machines (single core ones - dual core models are really expensive). I hope I can run Win64 in Pentium D based machines.... Any one has some suggestions whenter to go for Laptop or Desktop?. I don't want to spend too much on some really really high end machines Thanks, Madhu.

You have not stated any reasons for getting a laptop (e.g. onsite work, sitting on the beach and editing photos etc.) If you do get a laptop make sure it has a good hard-drive. You can have 2gigs of RAM and any reasonable Photoshop work will still thrash the hard-disk. But it sounds like a desktop for you. You'll get more bang for your buck and the monitor options will be better. Laptop screens are pretty good but can't compete with a good CRT or high-end LCD (e.g. Apple Cinema Display). regards, Paul Watson South Africa PMW Photography Gary Kirkham wrote: The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the cliché...Star Trek had it in spades.

Hello Madhu Off-topic question. Your surname, "Cheriyedath" sounds Mallu-ish. Are you originally from Kerala? I presume you are in the US now (low chance of a Kerala-based Mallu owning a laptop with 1 Gig) Nish :-)

Yes - I am from Kerala (Thrissur). For the last 6+ years, I have been living/working in US. low chance of a Kerala-based Mallu owning a laptop with 1 Gig Umm..thats correct.. I think a laptop with 512 MB RAM is luxury in Kerala. Thanks, Madhu.

I hope a hard-drive with 5400 RPM is okay for the laptop. I couldn't find any hard-drives with 7200 RPM for the laptop. Anyone used Windows XP 64 bit version? how is it? Thanks, Madhu.
