WinXP-64 bit

Anyone tried WinXP-64 bit? On what kind of machine you tried(AMD64 based ones or on Intel EM64T) How was the overall experience? I am trying to install WinXP-64 bit on one of my new machine. Thanks, Madhu.

I've been running x64 Pro since some of the early betas and off the top of my head i dont think i've ever had any real problems - if anything it flys compared the 32bit version on the same machine. The only problem you might experience is with driver support, Creative for instance have really crappy support at best. Currently my main system is a : Athlon 3800+ 64 ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard for 1GB of Kingston PC3200 RAM nVIDIA Geforce 6800 Ultra (Gigibyte) Creative Audigy 2 Sound Card Gavin Taylor w: http://www.gavintaylor.co.uk

One question - Any performance issues while running 32bit programs? I hope most 32 bit programs will run Thanks, Madhu.

I have run it on both types of machines. EM64T dual Xeon at work and AMD64 at home. The only real problem I have had is with our work software because it covers too many things at once. I run OpenGL video, directX sound, video streams, and others. The graphics run fine, but when I start bringing in the others, things die. Really it is the only application that I have found that does poorly. 32 bit software runs fine in 32bit emulation and gets a full 4gig slice of memory to itself (no virtual swaps), 64bits can run native. As a developer, going 64bit means getting all your DLLs to 64bit as well, you can't intermingle 64bit and 32bit in the same application (which I think is where our software is having problems, the Direct X calls are going native instead of 32bit). Because I use that most at work, I can't go 64bit at work, I am considering trying again at home now that more drivers are available. I have to have a 32bit OS at home to run some work stuff, but I will probably move to 64bit again soon as primary OS. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Not that I've experienced if anything things seem to run smoother - but that might me just be imagining it :). The only problem I've found with 32bit support is trying to find replacement software which uses it's own custom drivers, for instance virtual cd software, last time i checked Alcohol or Daemon Tools still hadn't released updates to work on x64. I was playing WoW on my Win64 and I get the same framerate as under Win32. I am running Win64 on an AMD 3000+. I am doing all of my development on it now and have no problems with that. The biggest issue is the lack of some drivers for things. I cannot use my scanner (Canon LiDE 20) becaquse there are no drivers. I also had an issue trying to get my printer to work since there were no drivers. I did find a different driver that worked ok for the printer, but if I want to scan I have to reboot into Win32.
