I've just been reading through a quite detailed review of the Beta 1 on www.techweb.com[^] and it seems to be quite spiffy in places. Some cool features coming hopefully. One thing I didn't much like was the Aero look. It kinda reminded me of a bad Linux window decoration theme. Hope it changes. :sigh:

You're not really seeing the full Aero bits. Those'll be inlcuded in Beta 2. I think it's a bit misleading for Microsoft to call this look Aero when that piece hasn't fully landed yet.

But what will be really interesting is -- and I can't find the article right now, but I believe it was mentioned on Wesner Moise's blog -- that there was recently a quiet announcement of a project dedicated to creating the final UI appearance for Vista. Will be interesting to see in any case. Hopefully they go more the route of professional Apple look instead of the I-Just-Graduated-From-Preschool Windows XP look. :)

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they borrowed heavily. What I'm looking forward to most is coding with an all-managed API, WinFX, with a new set of hardware-accelerated, HWND-less common controls. Indigo -- err, Windows Communication Foundation X| -- should be pretty fun too. The name is bland, but the technology rocks. While on the topic of naming, "Windows Communication Foundation" & "Windows Presentation Foundation" are about as exciting as an Amish farmer. I much preferred Avalon, Indigo, and Longhorn. I read somewhere a joke about MS naming practices, something like if Microsoft made toilet paper, it'd be called Butt Wiper. Definitely holds true here.

The areas that I've experienced the most difficulty with are the Windows Explorer and using the Network tool to access other computers on a peer network. Helloooo Microsoft. This is the area that people have ALWAYS complained about. Can't you get this part right, FIRST!?!?!? I know, I'm always looking for the negative! Marc My website

I just hope they do not follow their boneheaded skins plan of Windows XP and only release a couple skins while blocking (or at least trying to ) third party development of them. With all that graphics power of DirectX, they need to make sure anyone can develop themes for the system. I am just glad people hacked the themes to allow others, I sure could not put up with the standard Windows XP themes. Rocky <>< My Blog[^]
