File synchronisation
-
I'm using Microsoft's SyncToy to synchronise 3 computers and love it. The only problem is that synching networked machines can be painfully slow, so I was wondering if there was synch utility that: - runs on all machines - watches the directories to be synched - at synch, each application will send the other machine a list of changes to the given folders, nothing more - Synchronisation will then commence based on the shared info. The beauty of this is that the app could talk to other machines once an hour (say) and perform a synch only when it needs to, instead of having to do a full directory scan each time a synch is initiated. Anyone heard of such a beast? cheers, Chris Maunder

Thanks for the link! It solves an immediate problem for me at work, and I can probably get the boss to okay a one year subscription. I have the master software for downloading electric meter data on my PC, and have copies on the server for others to view without changing anything. But it's a pain to copy the master DB to the mirror folders manually. I think this little gem will solve that problem. Another little niggling problem is that the boss carries his entire history in emails on his laptop, but he wants them all on the server, too, so that they get backed up every night. I suspect that this is going to be a far better solution than anything Windows2000 provides. Thanks again!:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

Brilliant - thanks. [Actually now that I'm looking at it I really, really dislike the "purchase a licence for X months" licencing term. I don't want to hire the application - I want to buy it and use it for as long as I care to. Next!] cheers, Chris Maunder -- modified at 3:13 Tuesday 30th August, 2005

"Symantec.com > Enterprise Store Error: We're Sorry. The requested product is not available for purchase at your location. Error Number: 30029909 - 0 " That's a reasonable example of what happens every time I try to use a product from Symantec. "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9
