Konstantin Vasserman wrote: Do I ignore him, do I post a polite response or do I go off on the person? How dare he do that to a CPian ! Konstantin, Just Send me his email ! If he has used remailers Cheif Inspector Wluff can track him down ! And I'll personally have someone visit him for you ! :-) But seriously the moment you release a program in any from expect abuse. I released an ultra Kewl and useful program on CNET a couple of years ago and the only payment I asked for was a preformatted thankyou letter "if they desired" to be sent and I got more abuse than thankyous :-((( So I haven't released anymore Freeware ! Well, I am in the process of removing of my software from the Internet. I've had about enough of this stuff. Anything else I ever write will be commercial software. At least then I will have an incentive to listen to crap from my users... :) Thank you for support. :)

Here is the latest comments from a user (?) of one of the freeware programs that I wrote and distributed for a couple of years to several hundred thousand users: "hey you idiot, make a good program for once, that is at least compatible with Windows XP. I would appreciate if idiots like you werent tought to program or helped by other good programmers who wasted their time on a good for nothing moron like you." I guess, this message goes well with the survey about "Programmer's egos"... :) I am not sure how I feel about it. Sad, I guess... I am not sure how to deal with someone like this ether... Do I ignore him, do I post a polite response or do I go off on the person? What do you think? Thanks.

From reading your other replies to other people's responses, I feel you are being far to leanient on this guy. First, I would send him an email telling him very politely that you appreciate the feedback, but were unable to find his order in your database, and require him to send you the receipt he would have received after purchasing the product. (yes I know it was freeware, but make out it wasn't). Obviously he will reply with yet another strongly worded email - but this was the intention. Now send one further email to him under you name saying that you know he is a pirate and you are reporting him to the B.L.A. (note: that stands for Bob Lovers Anonymous ;)) Then, leave it for about a week before initiating an extensive personal data collection process using as many government and/or news web sites as possible, and maybe a few phone calls to his local council too. Find out how many years this guy has been living at his current address; find out if he has ever withheld taxes; find out when he last made a credit application; find out how many illegitimate children he has fathered; etc, etc. Posing as a public liquidation officer or corporate balif will generally let you have access to this kind of data with no real questions asked. When you enough data to be able to sucessfully scare the sh*t out of him with your knowledge, write a carefully worded - but strong - email indicating that you have sufficient proof that he is a major international Intellectual Property Violator, and you have referred his case to your superiors to be handled immeadiately. Then edit your email account settings so the name reads "Templeman, D."; the email address reads "d.templeman@bla.gov"; and set the the reply address to one you own). Make sure to sign your name at the base of the email like so: Officer Templeman, Ricahard D. Chief of External Investigations B.L.A. Mark it as Important and Confidential and then hit Send. Sit back and wait for the reply... :-D ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Konstantin Vasserman wrote: What do you think? Personally I would also feel sad about the whole affair. I would get angry too but at the end of the day I would be pretty hurt. In my opinion if someone downloads a freeware app and does not like it then they have no right to write such a non-productive criticism. By all means they can write back and inform you of various bugs or better ways of doing things, but not what that idiot wrote. Frankly that guy sounds like he has something else against you or is just lashing out at the nearest person to come to mind. I would however not write back to him (funny how I automatically assume it is a guy and not a woman) unless it was to genuinely ask what problems he had with the app. He might calm down and write back what the bug was, at least that is useful. If he answers back negatively though then forget about the whole affair. I would avoid being sarcastic or nasty in your reply email as frankly then you are simply sinking to his level. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa Do you Sonork? Thank you for suggestion. :) I think you are bringing up a whole new theme into this. I mean the whole "freeware" issue when you spend all your time making something for people and give it to them for free and then you get slapped in the face by a bunch of f**kers like the one who posted crap on my message board. I have a good friend who thinks that you should never ever give anything for free, because people should never get something they did not earn. When people get staff they did not pay for (one way or the other) they get spoiled and corrupted... My ventures in freeware world are full of examples of people abusing the good thing and turning into this monsters who expect you to keep giving them stuff. And if you refuse to give - they demand it like you owe them something. It is truly amazing... and very frustrating...

Hi Rob, I'm at a little beach town called Mt-Maunganui, I haven't seen a true C++ person since I got back into coding, 3.5 yrs ago .I'm right into this Internet stuff these days, these collaborative type efforts etc are real Kool. :-) I use to stay at the Essodon Hotel a lot years ago right near the train station, and there is a 7/11 on a corner there. They had strippers there one night a week and some of them could have been Olympic Gymnasts, mate. :-) What I really liked about Melbourne was the Trams, you could have a few beers and just jump on one Fantastic Stuff Mate. What I didnt like about Melbourne was that there were 4 seasons in every day while I was there. You never knew how to dress, one moment it was stinking hot and the next it was blowing a gale, and then it would start pouring down with rain. If I told you who I worked for in Melbourne, you probably wouldn't trust me anymore to be honest! So I wont post it here online, as I'd loose all the good CPian friends I've made real quickly ! Send me a private email and I'll tell you mate :-) Hey does the Australian still have a great technology section on Tuesdays ? There website is pretty garbled and doesn't really show what the printed media does ? Regardz Colin J Davies

No way. I made the mistake a few months back of paying to much attention to you guys when BBNO was first dreamt up. "Yes David", "Go on David", "It will be fun". Yeah Right. An entire week of very little real work being done purely for two and a half minutes of absolute drivel! Then of course there was the web site http://www.davidwulf.co.uk/bob. 'nuff said about that. In fact, the only worthwhile thing to come out of all this was the Bill SerGio animation. :omg: ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. I would appreciate if idiots like you werent tought to program or helped by other good programmers who wasted their time on a good for nothing moron like you." I guess, this message goes well with the survey about "Programmer's egos"... :) I am not sure how I feel about it. Sad, I guess... I am not sure how to deal with someone like this ether... Do I ignore him, do I post a polite response or do I go off on the person? What do you think? Thanks.

Konstantin, Well, that's the funny thing about it I suppose, the users of the software think you're getting something out of it anyway, in the form of advertising (Dundas Upload), promoting something else (Eudora), or building a user base you'll later try to commercialize (BCGSoft), so people act like they've paid for the software even if they haven't. All that being said, the tone the guy used was not constructive or supportive, and so doesn't deserve the consideration you're giving him or the concern he's caused you. If you want to push back on him, I'd simply send him an email revoking his license to use the software. David http://www.dundas.com

Well, the software is free, so he has no room to bitch. Tell him thanks for the feedback and that you truly appreciate such valuable insight that is as eloquently stated as he has done. Add a smiley at the end - that'll piss him off. Oh yeah, you should include his comments on your web page so that others can see how much he enjoys your software. I would ask him what didn't work and if it's reasonable to fix let him know. If he isn't willing to take the time to explain what the problem is then he's just a troll and you can ignore him.
