For what it's worth, a while back there was post on Slashdot about this. Many of the replies seemed to indicate that it's not much better, but some of the very worst complaints had been addressed. I think this was around 6 months ago. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! is not quite correct. Slaves is more like it. Why anyone would ever work under conditions half as bad as those described is beyond me. Chris Meech I am Canadian. Chris Meech wrote: Why anyone would ever work under conditions half as bad as those described is beyond me. First job, right out of school, not knowing what to expect, and accepting what your boss tells you. What did someone say here a few days back? working for a company automatically includes loyalty, if you can't be loyal, you leave. That is the issue here too, the bosses included long hours in the "loyalty" clause, you work or you leave. If you are new in the biz you have to weigh the long-term affects of leaving a job and trying to find a new one (without any time to actually do looking while employed) and staying on under horrible conditions. If you have no basis to make that comparison, or limited basis, it makes it doubly difficult to make that choice. I never worked for EA, but I have worked under those conditions. It is also the reason I left my last employer. Long hours or not, I had to leave and it was not an easy prospect and highly complicated by who my boss was. I either had to go unemployed, relocate to another city, or change businesses to one my boss did not have an influence over. I chose the latter. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. (Japanese Proverb)

Hmm, anonymous letters. I'm guessing there's more to that story. I know of three people that have worked for EA Canada (Burnaby). One fellow is still (well, as of 2003 anyway) working there and has since they bought DSI (Distinctive Software) back in 1990 or '91. I knew his brother quite well back then and he too worked at EA Canada for a short time before working for Sony. The other one I know of worked in the art department (don't know if she still is). I remember them worked very long hours, especially when release dates were nearing. Being the retail game market, you can image if a game is behind schedule and the Christmas season is looming... The fact that they have some long term employees is promising - it can't be that bad for them to stay on for so long. Maybe just the rookies have to work that much? The good news is that part of Vancouver (Burnaby) is an awesome place to live. I used to live about 6 blocks from the EA building there. Cheers, Drew.

Months remained until any real crunch would start, and the team was told that this "pre-crunch" was to prevent a big crunch toward the end Wow. Talk about a very old line. The bottom line is that it's the nature of the beast in our industry to work some long hours and pull all-nighters when in crunch mode. However, if the gig starts out like that, then you know you're dealing with a company that is in constant "crisis mode". This is always a symptom of a much deeper illness - bad management - and I would stay as far away from that company as I could get. I worked for EA for a while back in the 90's and they did expect a LOT of extra hours. 60 hour work weeks were typical and 80 hours (including weekends) were the norm in crunch time. The problem was that managers loved to go into 'crunch mode' as early as possible to squeeze as much free work out of us as possible. on the upside though EA was a fun place to work. A lot of very smart people who loved video games. I miss working in the video game industry, but I don't miss the hours.
