I bought a SATA drive the other day, plugged it straight into my motherboard, heard it powerup, but nothing comes up in my bios, there are no SATA settings there...Continue to load XP from my master disk, can't find the new drive anywhere - tried to detect new hardware, optimistically opened My Compter...nada. Shut down, removed all other devices, CDs, DVDs, IDE HDs, soundcards, and tried again with the same result. Tried a different cable also with the same result. Working with the assumption that the HD is working, are there any other suggestions for what I could try before I try & return the HD to the vendor? /jason

There are jumpers on the back of the drive - make sure they are correctly set. i just pulled up a document for a WD drive and if PM2 is enabled and you do not have a BIOS that supports PM2, the drive won't do anything... Steve

You`re probably missing a driver that would have come with your motherboard. I couldn`t get Windows to install on my new SATA drive, setup wouldn`t see it. I had to point to my motherboard`s cd when it says something like press F6 if you use a scsi drive (don`t remember the message). Some drivers were loaded and setup saw the drive and resumed.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think this is the problem though. I did a search for Western Digital and PM2 and found a PDF manual (http://www.wdc.com/en/library/sata/2779-001006.pdf[^]) that says that PM2 is turned off by default. It also mentions that if PM2 is enabled on the HD, but not by the BIOS, the HD will not spin up, which mine does. So I think I can rule this out without further testing  /jason

I think this is the solution. While researching the above topic, I found this in a FAQ Q: Why does Windows recognize the drive as "SCSI" when it is Serial ATA? A: Most third party controller cards and RAID adapters are recognized as a SCSI device under Device Manager. This is normal and will not affect your drive or system performance. I'll let you know when I get home & test it /jason

I had a Promise Ultra 66 HD like that (it wasn't SATA - it was IDE but showed up as a SCSI) - it needed special drivers that had to be loaded when Windows was installed. Maybe it's something similar? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! Is it visible in the Disk Management Console? If not you need a driver for the SATA controller. - Anders

It's not visible. I have checked my motherboard CD for SATA control drivers, but there don't seem to be any other than some RAID drivers. I also have the additional problem of not having a floppy drive to install 3rd Party drivers with. When will driver manufacturers join the Optical revolution? /jason
