Asking for comp. time after working during hurricane ...
-
Due to the hurricane our organization (1000+ employees) was closed from Sept. 21st until Oct. 17th. But being the web guy I was asked to keep the site up and running ... which I did. Infact I was working for more than 8 hours a day for most part of 3 weeks while others were taking care of their homes etc. I had received an email from my boss's supervisor appreciating my work and that I would be compensated for the time I had put in (while others were not working) during the birth of my child next month. Today is the first day at work and I have not heard anything at all from my boss about any comp time. Should I wait for him to initiate? Is it too early to ask? (I am afraid that they might forget all the hardwork as days go by) I put in 3 weeks so does that mean I should ask for 3 weeks comp. time? Please advice ... -- modified at 17:37 Monday 17th October, 2005

Hi Pete, In my opinion it is never too early to ask for something of this nature. Heck, I plan my vacation time 7 - 8 months in advance. Also, my experience with middle management is that they will try to squeeze every little bit out of you that they can; don't expect them to volunteer the time or remuneration. I'd say it is up to you to politely and professionally push for what is rightfully yours.

Was that 3 Weeks of unpaid work? WOW! As an expecting father as well, I'd say get every hour that you can. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that? - Jack Burton

simply reply to his email and indicate what you expect the comp time should be and when you want to take it. if he objects, he will say so. if he concurs, he will say so.

Given the fact there was a major disaster going on while that discussion took place I'd give your boss the benefit of forgetting. What I would do is say: "On MM-DD my child is supposed to arrive. I'd like to go ahead and use the comp time you and I discussed during the hurricane that will follow her birth (yes, that's a joke but you might leave it in for humor). I'd like to take X number of days off after she is born and I'd like to comp those days off. I know that when you and I discussed this last there was a rather large storm system thrashing where we live and you've been quite busy since then. This email is just a reminder of that discussion but also a request (with your permission) to go ahead and make arrangements for me to use that time off." I wouldn't open a door for them to back out or go back on their word. Obviously if they intend to do that they will anyway and you haven't any say in that. But if you are polite in your initial request and you hedge a tiny bit towards the assumption that the comp-time won't be a problem I think that's your best approach. - Rex
