I'm unfortunate enough to have a DVD player that does not play CD-Rs. I'm looking into getting an MP3 stereo component but I find the prices to be ridiculous (close to US$1000, some more). My first thought is, I'll show them ... I'll build a little computer and get a nice sound card and hook it up through the stereo and also run some wire (or buy wireless) and have it on my home network. Has anyone else done this? How did it work? Has anyone purchased a reasonably priced MP3 stereo component that hooks up to the LAN? I can build the machine no problem, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a better solution ... I know geeks love music (myself very much included) and I bet some people have come up w/ some really good ideas ... I'm interested in hearing 'em if you'd be so kind. Thanks. I'm not sure exactly what your looking for, but I bought a DVD player that plays DVD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW for US$99 at Sam's Club. It even has a digital optical output that goes to the surround sound receiver. No fuss, no muss & cheap.

I have a server with tons of mp3s on it. I wrote a little ISAPI dll to recurse through the directories and display links to each album. The user can bring up a playlist containing each song on the album by clicking on the hyperlink. Near my stereo, I have a small workstation (200 MHz) that can connect to the server over the network. The workstation is hooked up to my stereo via the soundcard. Just open the web browser, connect to the internal mp3 website, and click on the album you want to listen to. Works like a charm. :) Jon Sagara "There are lies, damned lies and statistics." -- Mark Twain.

We just run a box that exists on the network to serve mp3s. The HDD is so big they even let me put some of my mp3's on it, and we all have good speakers & soundcards. US$1000 for MP3 player? Sounds strange. Here in Norway we can buy Samsung and Philips DVD players with MP3 CD support that cost $200-$300, and Norwegian prices are not cheap, believe me! One thing you should be aware of, if you're going to get stand-alone MP3 player, is to check how it browses CD directories and how it shows file names. Some of the first MP3 players were not able to show long file names, or were not able to group files based on their directories. Vagif Abilov COM+/ATL/MFC Developer Oslo, Norway

Not sure where you came across the $1000 price tag. One note about playing MP3s - you should add an equalizer to your system, since the tonal quality of MP3s often needs reeinforcement. Most amplifiers/receivers aren't able to provide the resolution of an equalizer. I bought the Nady GEQ215 Dual 15-Band EQ from Musician's Friend for $100. It's very nice! If you're looking for a car CD/MP3 player, I recommend the Aiwa CDC-MP3. You can get it from Crutchfield for $250. You'll need to add an external power amp if you don't already have one. In my experience, the stock speaker outputs of most car decks are pretty wimpy. I've converted my entire CD collection to MP3. It's great having a hundred+ songs on a disc! Hope this helps! /ravi "There is always one more bug..." http://www.ravib.com ravib@ravib.com

I guess one thing I didn't make clear is that I want to play MP3s directly from my MP3 server ... I'm no longer interested in buying yet another DVD player or CD player and burning a ton of CDs. Buying a $99 DVD player wasn't really the point of the exercise :> I was looking to see if anyone was doing anything interesting in networking an MP3 "server" to play stuff through the stereo. This sounds exactly like what I want to do. Let me ask you this, are you using a wireless network? Any problems w/ bandwidth? I imagine on 100MB, streaming an MP3 over the wire isn't a problem, but 11MB MIGHT be. Oh ya, and care to cough up the source to that ISAPI DLL? :) Good people drinking good beer RateBeer.com

Most mp3's are at around 128-160 kbps, which fits the slot even if you take TCP/IP-overhead into account. Hell, I stream 128 kbps from shoutcast servers on a 512 kbps ADSL line. No problems whatsoever.

I got a cord at Radio Shack for $9 that runs from the line out on my sound card to AUX. input on my reciever. Works pretty well. Josh Knox that-guy.net
