*GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR*!!!!   ah hour ago i copied 15 lines of text (about 40 characters a line) from notepad into VS2003, since i needed to form variable names from the text. an hour later (i had to reboot in the end) i *may* be back to the point where i can edit some text. i have read the recent threads pointing out that Microsoft actually make functional and usable IDE's with great interest, and basically agreed with them. however i rather like the idea of a text editor that actually lets me edit text in real time! instead i have a text editor (VS2003) that several times a day just stops working, while i am typing, and there is *nothing* i can do until it decides to start working again. today reached a new level though. i selected my text, pressed CRTL-H for find and replace, entered my conditions, and hit "do it". 5 minutes later, literally, VS finally responded, with a message box warning me about no undo on find and replace in files. i did not ask for find and replace in files, i did not run find and replace in files. in the end i had to edit my 15 lines in VIM, since while VIM is not an IDE, at least it is an editor that can actually edit. i am now going to try and think calm thoughts, before i do something increadibly stupid and violent. and before someone asks, no i am not compiling in VB with background compiling, i was editing C++ code and not compiling. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

Sounds like a reformat is in order. :)

Picture a huge catholic cathedral. In it there's many people, including a gregorian monk choir. You know, those who sing beautifully. Then they start singing, in latin, as they always do: "Ad hominem..." -Jörgen Sigvardsson

Sounds like something deeper than VS 2003. Check your system cheers, Chris Maunder

This sort of thing happens to me often. The reason ? MSN Messenger just randomly decides it needs to use 96% of my processor. Now, when my system freezes, I hit CTRL-ALT-ESC, sort by processor, and when I see messenger at the top I kill it. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

If you hit Ctrl+**Shift**+H instead of Ctrl+H, you get the find/replace in files. The two dialogs look very similar, by the way. Do you have any add-ins loaded? You might want to remove them, as they can cause odd sorts of problems like this.

you don't know the half of it ;) windows has been installed on this machine 4 or 5 times over the last few years, without ever reformatting, first on C: and then later on D: :~ the machine is in a slight mess as a result. i have had a new HD sitting on my desk for about a month now, but it took so long for the people in charge of ordering to get the media for a reinstall / upgrade that i started an urgent high priority job, and cannot afford the down time to reinstall everything from scratch until the project is over. i will embrace this oportunity to practice transending the stress and become calm at work *takes deep breaths* zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness
