My wife and I are buying an All in One printer for Christmas. One that scans, prints, reads memory cards and prints pictures as well. What types of things should I watch out for? Also what is reasonable ppm, color resolution and scanner resolution?

I favor printers with separate ink cartirdges for the primary colors. Seasonally, we go through a lot of red/green at christmas, red at valentine's etc. This has helped cut costs. However, for printing photos, in general, we gave up and use pbase or kodak easyshare gallery and just order the prints over the internet. They look better, are on better materials, etc. and saves a lot of time and hassle with getting the printheads adjusted 'exactly' to avoid 'scan lines' in the printed photos. We have a model similar to the Epson Stylus CX7800 and are pretty happy with it for most everyday scnaning, printing, and copying. As mentioned, we just do photos online.

I have used an All-in-one printer for quite a while now. Fax capability is nice, since you will now be able to direct the occasional fax to your home phone and you do not have ot leave ther computer on if you do not want to. For the scanner/copier: Multiple sheet feeder is crucial to scanning. I almost never have just 1 page to scan, the sheet feeder is great. Digital pictures: do not do it, except for the occasional picture or two. Color ink is expensive. I do not know how much use use a digital camera, but I take a lot of pictures. It is much cheaper and better to get them on-line. I use cmphotocenter.com, they give prints for $0.18 each when you prepay. Email me if you are interested and I can give you an ID to get 20 free prints for the first time instead of 10. So that implies that the card reader is not very useful. At least in my experience and usage. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Yes, there is a prepaid prints option. Let me see if I can do this clickety thing correctly. http://www.cmphotocenter.com/about/po_pricing.php[^] When you prepay for 500 photos at a time, it will maintain your balance until you get to your 500 pictures. You do have to pay the shipping for each order. We literally order 100's of pictures at a time, but you could order 27 prints or 50 or whatever per order and it will keep your account balance. The shipping is always separate/additional and based on the size of the order. The ID if you are interested in the free 20 prints instead of 10 is 92435541.
