I've been looking at VPN software recently - was fiddling last weekend with OpenVPN - got it working, albeit with some headaches. Tonight I was listening to a podcast that mentioned a VPN app called Hamachi. Hamachi is a UDP-based virtual private networking system. Its peers utilize the help of a 3rd node called mediation server to locate each other and to boot strap the connection between themselves. The connection itself is direct and once it's established no traffic flows through our servers. I gave it a try - almost zero configuration and a GUI so simple and light, any granny could use it. The guy in the podcast is a security guy, and thinks this thing is designed to perfection. Anyone else tried this app before? Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion worked Atlanta Flames games in the 1970s with the splendid Jiggs McDonald. One night, Geoffrion said, "Jiggs, there are only three things to hockey: shooting and skating." McDonald said, "Right, Boomer. And what's the third?" The exasperated Geoffrion replied," Jiggs, that's the three. Shooting. And. Skating."

Yes. It's amazing. My friends and I use it to make VLANs over the net for gaming. I'm also using it at several businesses.

Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

UDP? This sounds not good. When you have to make some UDP traffic pass through a router, you will get headaches. ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA] - eMule Server .NET

Why? My router have routed gazilions of UDP packetes and none of them got hurt ;) Seriously, where have you got the idea that UDP is non-routable? - Anders

Huh? I agree with Anders. Unless my college networking people have failed to tell me something different. Paul

Almost all of my work at work is UDP based, Unicast, or Multicast, it has been routed to pretty great distances. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. (Japanese Proverb)

I mean through your home/office router. I've got a ZyXEL ADSL router, and almost all the UDP traffic is usually lost (the BIOS is up to date) A friend of mine has a Netgear ADSL router, and he notice the same problem. The odd problem is that the router routes only a part of the UPD packets, even on the LAN (the LAN has almost no traffic, so the router is not on its load limit), the rest is lost somewhere in the Universe... If this problem is only mine, forget it... ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA] - eMule Server .NET
