any advice on internet phone calls between two PC's?

the question is fairly simple, how do i get a working voice connection between two PC's? i have already tried several obvious methods, and here are my experiences. hopefully someone can suggest a cunning plan :) my PC is a 3gig AMD with a 1 mega bit broadband connection, based in England it has recently been reformatted with winXP pro for various reasons the other PC has unknown hardware, it has just been rebuilt with a new motherboard and case, and has win98 installed on it. it is connecting via a 56k dialup model and is located in America, so i cannot exactly go and fiddle with it  if we both use Microsoft MSN Messenger then text mode chat works just fine, and the other PC can view my webcam quite happily. a few months ago (before a power surge destroyed the other PC's motherboard) i could view their webcam as well. so far we have not re-tested receiving their webcam. however whenever i ask MSN Messenger to do a voice connection it fails to connect us. no useful error is ever produced. i have tried playing with my firewall and am told there is no firewall at the other end, all without success. this never used to work before the two machines were redone either, so it is not a new problem *sigh* next up we tried the latest release version of Yahoo Messenger. we can get a working audio connection, which proves the hardware is capable of this. however even on my machine if i do anything (like move the mouse  ) then Yahoo goes "NO!!!! i cannot take the CPU load, loosing 50% of your audio data" X| as you may gather we are not impressed with the yahoo audio. the last version of yahoo messenger (6 from memory) used to produce a working audio connection, but in that version only one person at a time could talk X| at least they have fixed that, but yahoo is currently considered so poor as to be useless. so next we tried skype. we used to use this very successfully for audio, so i had high hopes, although i was slightly warey since i have a memory of a report saying skype was selling its user contact list to direct advertisers  hopefully i am imagining that. however skype simply returns "unable to connect - unknown error" when we try to get an audio connection working, and we never got text messages to get through either :suss: it is not helped by normally having these conversations gone midnight local time for me, when i am nearly asleep, so perhaps i have overlooked something very obvious :-O it would be nice if we could at least get some clue as to why

Hardly, given the length of the post explaining what you've tried! :-D

i can and do use MSN Messenger audio to connect to someone in Hawaii with broadband at both ends and this works perfectly.
Given that, I'd say it is not a problem on your end. Even though they say there's no firewall on the other end, are you sure? There very well may be a software firewall that they don't realize is there. Have you tried NetMeeting or GTalk? Marc VS2005 Tips & Tricks -- contributions welcome!

If all you wish to use is audio I would suggest getting Teamspeak or Ventrilo and setup the server on your machine. Both run well but Vent has much better quality voice. Plus you can also get more people involved in the conversation. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer
