hkcmd.exe - Cursed from Hell?

I had a bizarre problem Friday night, just remembered it this morning. I was scanning the msconfig list to check which items I could safely shut down. I used Google search to determine the purpose of each item, one of which was called hkcmd, which I've since found out is an Intel hotkey app. Bizarre part... If I type this into Google search: hkcmd.exe Google spins its wheels. (stays on the search form w/hourglass showing) I tried searching for hkcmd by itself, works fine. I tried searching with a space in place of the dot, works fine. I tried searching for other file names, all work fine. OK, so I figure, maybe there's a glitch in Google code. I then try a search for hkcmd.exe on Yahoo, and sure enough, it spins its wheels. Ditto for Google Groups, and ditto for MSN. I then fire up IE and Opera to verify it's not a browser problem - they produce the same results. I closed down my firewall to make sure nothing strange is set, and I still get the problem. Anyone have any ideas as to what might cause this? Windows? Router? My ISP? [ Edit ] Tried another machine on the LAN, same problem. "My dog worries about the economy. Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. It works quite fine for me on Google. Belated New Year wishes to everybody. :-O Cheers, Vikram.

Funny, it's the same where I work, but now from my home it works fine and I even found a posssible explanation: it seems there's a proxy or a router somewhere along the line that blocks all HTTP-GET requests with *cmd.exe in them. Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.

Looks like you've found the answer. Based on a handful of network tool reports, it looks like my ISP is blocking it. "My dog worries about the economy. Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. That's almost seven dollars in dog money" - Wacky humour found in a business magazine
