As much as I enjoy living in NYC, I do miss seeing the night-time sky. A couple of years ago I went to the Sahara for the first time, seeing the milky-way so clearly (nearest source of light pollution was about 30 miles away) way humbling. Gary Flickr Photos[^]

You can get a reasonable night sky from desert areas of the US - this for example[^] was photographed by me recently in Joshua Tree national park. '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones MVP - Visual Basic Merrion Computing Ltd

Nice pictures! Yes I know I can get out of the city (and do at every chance I get), I've yet to be anywhere as dark as it felt in the Sahara (though of course it didn't feel dark at all, there was no moon but we could see pretty well using starlight). Going to look at your pictures a little more now. Gary Flickr Photos[^]

I saw some great night skies in Lesotho - high altitiude and no light pollution, plus southern skies have more of the milky way visible. '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones Merrion Computing Ltd

I wonder how many workmen with shovels/spades you could get looking into that one? or cue old joke. "A large hole has appeared in the city Main Street. Officials are mystified as to how it got there but the police are looking into it" I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

This will point out my ignorance with these types of things but how on earth can they measure that? Its not like they have a light-year tape measure that they can extend across it. And when they say "about" (as in about 325 by 250) how far are they off? It is not like anyone else else can dispute it. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

Using an approximate distance and trigonometry. There are types of variable stars whose period of osciliation is directly dependent on their mass (and intrinsic brightness), timing them and measuring thier brightness provides a good distance ladder for within the galaxy and other nearby ones. -- modified at 13:13 Friday 6th January, 2006 EDIT: also with nebula you don't have a firm edge, densities just taper off to the local background levels since they're not constant either deciding what to call the edge is somewhat arbitary, as are the axis you choose to make the measurements on.

Now all we need is some little daemon that grabs the pic and makes it the wallpaper of the day. :) Marc Pensieve
