It took only 8:17...

...to perform a preliminary install of Win98 on the "killer machine" - only 8 minutes, 17 seconds from the time I typed "setup" to the time it booted the last time. I haven't added any hardware specific drivers yet, but still, that's a damn impressive install time. Oh yeah, I had copied the contents of the win98 CD onto the hard drive to save some time. OK, having such a machine could be interesting. Two questions remain: a) What machine are you talking about? b) Why should anyone want to install Windows 98 anyway?

That is pretty damned good. That's impressive... I once installed Win98 in about 16 minutes, but from the CD, from "setup" to when it has already booted showing the tip of the day... but 8:17?? wow!! -- LuisR -------- Luis Alonso Ramos Chihuahua, Mexico www.luisalonsoramos.com

Luis Alonso Ramos wrote: Yeah, I did that too... I always like checking every single category and selecting everything I want. We programmers always do that, don't we? :omg: :-O That is so true. I actually get annoyed when I work on our sales guys laptops as they installed them with just the default options. So the bleeding OS is cluttered with stupid accessibility features (for people with 20/20 vision and sharp hearing), daft games and silly utilities. Once I simply reinstalled the sales guys laptop on a whim and got rid of all the crap. It was a good deal faster overall but the sales guy screamed "What happened to my OnScreen Keyboard*?" He never used it but thought it was cool and like having the icon there... go figure I have a specific setup that I use when using W2K (or now XP). A set of apps and utilities and settings that do not deviate across all the installations I have done. If there is something on the machine not in my list I get this itchy "uninstall" feeling :-D * with W2K you get a utility which shows an onscreen keyboard and you can type that way, a bit like a handheld. it sucks though of course regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge Martin Marvinski wrote: Unfortunatly Deep Throat isn't my cup of tea Do you Sonork? When you compare it to Win95 or WinXP, or even WinME, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that it's the only Windows version that I'm *positive* will work with the legacy hardware my sister owns, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that I'm also installing Win2K on the box just in case she can, in fact, use it witrh her legacy hardware, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that Win95 has no/nebulous support for USB (which my ister has indicated an interest in, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. When you consider that I'm not the primary user of this machine and I don't really care which version of Windows she's using, there's *nothing* wrong with Win98. I don't know how computer illiterate she is/isn't. Besides, her husband is involved, and he may be more knowledgable than she is.
