Linux was a very hot topic a year or so ago. Some PC vendors actually offers new systems with Linux installed vs Windows. I think today there may be fewer of these. I'm not a Linux person, so I have no first hand knowledge. Where do you folks that know/use Linux think it's heading? Ed

IMHO that is a good thing. The sooner poeople realise that Linux cannot make their toast and do their homework, and treat it as a mere mortal OS like any other, the sooner the negative hype around Linux will start to drop off, and the sooner people will embrace Linux for what it's good at - not what it's hyped to be good at. And then, with a bit of luck, all the Linux users under twelve will grow up and stop spamming me. I live in hope. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. Damn straight. I have always said that the worst thing Linux could ever do was to try to be come the OS for everybody. It would just fall into the same problems that MS faces everyday. 1. The more market share you get, the more you are a target for hackers. 2. The more market share you get, the more sensitive you have to be to backwards compatibility. (This one kills MS. NT would be half the size it is if they could just cut out half the crap for running software written for old versions of the OS.) 3. etc... Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I love it when those little anti-microsoft (for reasons unknown even to themselves, perhaps because it's trendy) kids decide to actually install Linux, and they actually choose WinLinux or something similar. Then they find the only reason Linux crashes less often is because it can do sod all. KDesktop did a good job of producing a very aesthetic interface on top of X, and I don't think that Linux would be as popular with anti-microsoft teenyboppers if KDesktop (or even Gnome) wasn't around to hide the nasty interior. LOL... This week I installed FreeBSD for the second time. First time was a disaster. Even CP/M did things better than FreeBSD. But, FreeBSD as matured a LOT in the last 5 years. When I installed KDesktop, I giggled to myself how much of a rip-off it was of Windows (which is a rip-off of Mac who stole from Xerox...) What distressed me was that it had so many bugs and such poor control of focus. (i.e. When I click on a button, I expect for it to do something. I should have to click on it multiple times to make sure it had focus properly first.) Of course, it took me 2 days to install KDesktop since XFree86 setup is basically brain dead. I don't use Macromedia Fireworks because it is cheaper than Adobe Photoshop. I use it because for my purposes it is a better product. Everyone taunted the Amazon move to Linux as proof that Linux is better. Ha! They did it based on the fact that Linux was cheaper, plain and simple. No other reasons. However Amazon can do that as all their front-end stuff is browser based and so can be viewed on everything from Mac to Windows to Linux. For other companies producing applications with an important front end component Linux is a bad choice. Sure base your server component on Linux but don't base your client component on Linux. Nish [BusterBoy] wrote: they stand a good chance of getting projects Wonderful, I am glad for them. Just hope they are doing it all for the right reasons. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge Martin Marvinski wrote: Unfortunatly Deep Throat isn't my cup of tea Do you Sonork?
