How is the quality of Apple format (AAC or ??)compared to WMA? Another question, I have a lot of CDs and if I want to burn them to use in iPod, do I need to convert to the Apple format? Or MP3 is okay? Thanks, Madhu.
I would recommend you always use MP3 when ripping CDs, but make sure to set the bit rate high 192kbps or higher. The higher the bit rate, the better the sound quality, but at a sacrifice of size. MP3 is the standard format that will play on any player and any OS. That's why mp3 players are called "MP3 Players". The only time I would use another format than MP3 is if I wanted to make a high quality compilation destined to be burned back onto a CD for CD audio players, like a mix CD for your car or something. Then, use a lossless format such as AIFF or WAV which don't compress the music, so you get the pure unadulterated sound of the original, but the files are very large. All other formats MP3, AAC, WMF compress the music (and shrink the file size) but at the cost of sound quality. If you compress them too much, you hear a swirly or muffled or pulsating tone.

The AAC format is quite excelent. Way better sound quality than a WMA or MP3. Much smaller file size compared to an MP3. Just a bit smaller compared to a WMA having an equal bit rate.

The iPod supports AAC and MP3. I'm not sure what other formats it supports. I do know that iTunes allows you to choose what format to import your music CD's to. It supports AAC, AIFF, MP3, WAV, and lossless (this one is huge).
AIFF is lossless and huge as well. You can select the format and bit rate and CD insert behavior in the preferences somewhere, I think under the "Importing" tab.

I just picked up an iPod Video a couple of days ago. I can understand why so many people like it. It has a nice and easy interface, great sound quality, and the video display is excellent too. There's also a neat game on it where you play something like "Name that tune", where it plays a clip of one of your loaded songs and you have to quickly select the song title. Also, the Zen may be cheaper, but the iPod will give you "geek cred". And isn't that equally important? :)

I realize I gave almost no direct answer in my post earlier. However, I would like to say that I love my 60 GB Video iPod. It's awesome. The click wheel is so intuitive. Even when I'm at my computer, I still use my iPod to listen to music rather than iTunes itself. :)

I'd go with the Creative for the lower price, reduced scratchability of the hardware, and the ability to play WMA. If you buy music online, be aware that going with an iPod means you're locked into iTunes and out of practically all other sites (assuming you do everything legally). iPods are a fashion/status symbol, you pay extra for the name. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP :cool: LINKS~! Creative Zen Vision:M is expensive($30) than iPod with the similar capacity. The only reason I thought of buying that is because of the WMA support. I think I almost made up my mind to go with iPod Thank you all for your valuable suggestions. -Madhu.

I recently got an iPod nano and it is one of the best made pieces of equipment I have had the pleasure of using. What strikes me is the quality and the depth of thought that has gone into its design. It does less than the zen or other players but what it does it does better than any other device. As for iTunes, I swapped to it before I got my nano and find it superior to WMP. Now that I have an iPod, iTunes has become even better as I can use the music store as intended. It is a lovely coupling. And the iPod has the style quotient. They had the zen next to it in the store and it really didn't compare. If that isn't important to you then fine but it is to me, just like Italian motor car design matters. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!
