Hi, I have a non-technical kind of a question. And I hope I donot offend anyone with this query. Apologies in advance. Now, for my question, I have my website doing some "xyz" business. Now, I would like to have my website to be the top (or atleast one of the top 10) searches that Google makes when, someone does a search on "xyz" keyword. Any links, suggestions, ideas, tips, procedures, or anything for that matter is welcome. Thanks a lot, Surya.

Wouldn't we all  We could tell you but then the next 10 people to read the answer would jump in ahead of you and you'd be pushed down to number 11  Seriously, Google for "search engine optimization". Ask the guys in the top ten results because they obviously know what they're talking about

I've succeeded in getting two sites at the top, two tips: 1. Make sure your Meta Content (Keyword, Subject & Description) contains words that may be unique to your site as well as a full description of what your site offers. 2. If possible, have some other sites link to your site, that's how google's webcrawler find a lot of it's sites, by following new links on known sites. you can't forget something you never knew...

Not having a go at you but it always makes me laugh when people talk about search engine optimization. You want to know the best way to rise up the rankings? Provide content and/or a service that's halfway good and is useful to people. Much more effective than trying to manipulate the search engines. There're any number of businesses that got torpedoed because Google changed their algorithms and they plummeted down the rankings. That's not a risk you want to expose yourself to.

I agree, I was lucky because the two companies I made the sites for had several unique features/services which could often be searched for. By unique I mean that very little sites out there will have that same keyword in their meta content. But having other site linked to yours does help google find you. Google only found my first site, after weeks I added a tiny link at the first one to point to the second and bam! Second one jumped to the top of the searchlist. you can't forget something you never knew...

Since Google displays hits based on a ranking algorithm and the most important ingredient in that algorithm is the number of links coming TO your site from other sites, IN-LINKS are the most important thing. But they can't be links from just any site (your Mom and your pals won't do) - they need to be from sites that are (a) relevant to your content, and (b) themselves already indexed by Google. The best way to get there is, as one of your replies suggests, to be the best bloody site of your kind that you can be, offering something that's in high demand. You can also politely ask other site webmasters to link to you (offer a reciprocal link to them). But even where and how they link to you is important. If they just add you to some "link list" it may not help much. It's better if they link to you from inside their own content, which makes you look more serious and important to the Google indexing crawler. This is a very HARD thing to do. I recommend you start with a good book on search engine optimization (I like "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies - seriously). Good luck chucksp Carpe Manana

The Meta tags are so easily screwed with that Google and co. don't pay much heed to them. The linking idea is good though, but more for the strength of the links than for finding the site in the first place. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!
