For the next person to say ...

"I tried posting in the correct forum but I didn't get an answer" For my part let me explain why I didn't answer you when you posted in the correct forum. After years (in many lounge cases decades) of answering the questions, I just ignore and do not answer your questions in the forums because: 1. Google (or a book) will provide not only the right answer but several versions of a more complete answer 2. I know that the answer would be found by using that little "search" function up the top of this page. 3. A university or high school certificate is earnt. That is you attend class, you ask questions, you complete assignments yourself and you are awarded a qualification based on that. I will not cheapen education by doing your homework. I will answer any questions or queries you need help with but if you paste your assignment into a message I will have to bitch slap you to tears and call your professor. 4. . . 999,999 I have travelled the oceans educating up and coming programmers and in my experience, if you are too damn lazy to google the answer or read a book, then quite frankly I do not want you to be a programmer, and I will never help. I want to help people. I want to make the world a friendly place. I want the Warratahs to beat the Brumbies. And I want to twist the nipples of any person that makes me feel like crap for not answering them by posting programming questions in the lounge. I ignored you for a reason. Next time before you post a programming question in the lounge, send me an email - andrewbleakley*gmail.com. I will tell you why I didn't reply. And if you show some measure of respect, consideration and effort I will send you the links to the answers. Kindest regards and wishes for a safe and happy easter I speak only for my self.

The thing is, where did Google get the answer from? Quite often, it's from places such as CodeProject, where a knowledgeable person has taken the time to put their hard-earned experience in print. Without people answering the questions in the first place, Google is no good. Google doesn't provide answers. Google just tells you where the answer is. Think of it this way. Every time you answer a question, you're probably not only helping the original poster, but anybody else with the same problem who can use the search engines.

Agreed. I assume so does Andrew Bleakley. Read his post again. I believe you missed his point. Hint: There is no point answering a guestion that has allready been answered. If the question requires a little bit reasearch (see: HOMEWORK) then you should do it ourself.

No! Try "half a cup in teaspoons". Google will tell you.

Perhaps that tell us more about the questions asked, than it does about Andrew. :)

This only works for articles. Messages on the forums are not seen by Google.

That wasn't very fair of you. Andrew may have more than one handle. Andrew may just be Chris Maunder in disguise. Andrew may have really answered more questions than Mr. Michael Dunn himself (OK. Thats probably not possible but you hopefully get the point) I'm not qualified enough to answer many questions and frankly, most people beat me to it on the ones I can answer.

But by researching your question you should also use the search on a particular CP forum so you can see if your question has been answered there. When people say to research something they don’t mean just use Google, they mean use all available material before asking a question that you can easily find the answer to if you just tried. Google just happens to be an easy place to point people to first. -Richard

I understand all of that. I was just addressing a "blanket" statement that could easily get misunderstood by the very folks it was meant to help.

Andrew is quite clear about why he is not answerring some questions, i was reacting on the fact that he gave the impression of spending years answering questions and that's not the case, at least not at the code project, under the name Andrew. Besides that fact i find it understandable that those who are new to programming are turning to sources such as the code project were they can go to a specific board and ask there question and hopefully get a good answer from a more experienced programmer and prefer this way before using Google. When you are new to this site (or programming) you can make the mistake of posting a question before doing a search on the topic to look for an answer, that can happen. :) With friendly regards, Eric Goedhart Skype: eric-goedhart Deep in the fundamental heart of mind and Universe there is a reason. -Slartibartfast -- modified at 9:59 Friday 14th April, 2006

Ok, now that you've told us what you will not answer do you mind giving us an example of what you do find worthy of an answer? Visual Studio and SQL are dead. Long live Visual Studio and SQL!

That's because it activated google calculator. If you search the web, it only sends you to site that will give you the answer.
oh, really?

Fair enough. I guess we all feel that we've tried everything already regardless of the level we're at when we post a question. Most of the good books aren't even in print anymore so I guess this site is ever more important because of that.
