Looking for Suggestions on Sunscreen...
-
I am in a predicament. I have very sensitive skin and am on the high risk list for skin disorders caused by over exposure to the sun. I am looking for some sun screens that do not have coconut oil or extracts in them because I am allergic to all things coconut. Don’t ask me how I am the only person I know that has the same allergy. Just trying to find shampoo and soap without it is hard enough. This has really been an issue for me in the past because of school and the unwillingness to go outside however, I recently bought a house and the yard work is piling up. I don’t think my neighbors would appreciate me doing it at night and lighting would also be a problem. In any case, can anyone give me some suggestions on sunscreens that lack anything coconut in them? Also, what do you fellow loungers suggest for an SPF rating? Brett A. Hat, long sleeved shirt? There are thousands of sun screen specific protective clothing on the 'net and in stores that are way more effective than any sun screen and are designed to be cool and breezy to work in.
I still have to be careful on what I wear outside too. I plain white cotten t-shirt only provides an SPF of 15. Also, I'd have to get a wide brim hat to cover my ears and neck although I can't help think of myself wearing a cowboy hat or my grandmother's sun hat. Thanks for the suggestions. This will probably be what I end up doing. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

I'd love to see the reaction that people driving by my house would get if I were wearing that mowing my lawn. :-D Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

I don't know about coconut, but I have moved to SPF 50 on all exposed skin. Even then, I get burned occasionally.

SPF is a tough one to recommend because it is more dependant on you. You should know how long you intend to be in the sun, and how fast you burn. The SPF is a multiplier to length of time. If you burn in 10 minutes, SPF 10 will allow you to stay out in the sun 100 minutes before burn, SPF 60 will allow you to stay out 600minutes (thus the high numbers are called sunblock). Sunlight is actually good for the body, but burning is not. These are also relative conditions, working on roof tops, or hiking through White Sands[^] means you get reflected sunlight so burning is accelerated. Also paying attention to your UV warning for the region[^] Paba is the coconut oil, I believe, look for one with aluminum oxide base? Unfortunately I prefer the Paba products, so I am not familiar enough with the chemical only versions, though a google on coconut allergy and sunscreen turned up a cinnamon based one. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Thanks for your very informative reply. I'll try googling the same as you and look up the cinnamon one. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

they would probably think you hired a gardner (at least here in Southern California, Hispanic or Oriental workers are the ones most often seen taking care of the yards) Steve

Well I live in a 12000 population town in NW Ohio and I think the minorities populate about 97% of the town. Everyone else is white as snow so I am pretty sure I would get some wierd looks. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

The best suncscreen I know of is "umbrella". ------- sig starts "Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

There are products made especially for people with sensitive skin - at least down here in Aus where of course its a great issue they are marketed as such - people dont realise that those bronzed Aussie lifeguard/surfers are walking adverts for skin-cancer !!! One that you might find worldwide is a 'Nivea' product - they make skin softeners (mainly for women), try the cosmetics dept at a large department store perhaps ? anyway, I would have thought your chemist (sorry, checks American-speak 'Pharmacist') would be able to recommend a suitable product We also have a dedicated retail network here in Aus that sell products solely to combat skin cancer, but thats not going to help you in the USA 'g'

There are two brands I like: Coppertone Sport (48 SPF) for when I go bike riding, and Nutragena Ultra-sheer (45) for when I'll be outside but not working out (such as when I'm driving). The Coppertone is designed to be water/sweat-proof but it does smell a bit strong, the Nutragena smells nicer and doesn't make your skin feel weird when it's on. Another suggestion, in addition to sunscreen, is to go to your local bike shop and look for long-sleeved shirts. Not the tight jerseys, but shirts. The material in those is made to take the sweat away from your skin to help your body cool itself. Plus, it's additional protection from UV.
