Networking with Bluetooth
-
Has anyone here setup a peer to peer network with Bluetooth? The scenario is this : I have two laptops and one internet connection (broadband). I know I could buy a wireless router and set it up so both laptops can connect to the internet, but I discovered that both the laptops have bluetooth capability. Both the machines detect each other and connect (Bluetooth) okay too. I tried setting up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the laptop connected to the modem (Laptop1) and the Network Setup Wizard went through fine on both the laptops. I'm now able to ping Laptop2 from Laptop1 (the one connected to the modem) but not vice versa. I've setup Laptop1 as the DHCP server and Laptop2 does successfully get its IP from it, but pinging Laptop1 doesn't work. I'm stuck now, any ideas? Unfortunately not ;P. This has more to do with networking and windows operating system. I'm working more on the protocol stacks of Bluetooth (so, lower layers, not application layers). Sorry, I can't help.

Hello... I think, that is a problem in Windows XP. I also got the same problem for about 3 weeks ago. I try to use the networking wizard. But it is not working. Try to delete the networking bridge (MAC Bridge). The only answer is to activate ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) directly from your broadband connection. For example: I create a new connection using PPPoE for DSL. Then I must choose "Properties" from this connection. Then I must choose the last tab at the right side. If you try this, then you can see a combobox. In that combobox, you can choose which adapter is used for your home networking. In that combobox I choose "Wireless Networking D-Link". Then if you press OK, windows will show a message box "The other computer must be set to DHCP". After that you can configure the Wireless Setting using AdHoc Network. Look at this link : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman\_02april08.mspx If your wireless device connected, you can see, that you get an IP Address from the your ICS host. (192.168.0.x). I think it is the same for Bluetooth. In the combobox you must choose your Bluetooth. Have fun with it.....:)
Thanks for the link, that looks like it could solve the problem. Regards Senthil _____________________________ My Blog | My Articles | WinMacro

i'm assuming your using Windows XP on both laptops? check your firewall settings on Laptop1 - it may not be config'd to allow incoming ICMP Echo requests...just guessing though... nicko
Thank you for your reply, but I did make sure ICMP echo requests are allowed. Regards Senthil _____________________________ My Blog | My Articles | WinMacro

I am looking forward to someone smart answering your question. I also want to connect two laptops, don't care how bluetooth, wifi, whatever, it must be wireless though. I tried to connect two laptops with their wifi's but it seems as if you need to have a wireless accesspoint. This enrages me! How unpractical is that??? If I meet a business partner at a coffee shop and we want to share data we can't connect our laptops's eventhough both have the wifi capability. Or is there a way? you can't forget something you never knew... -- modified at 2:58 Friday 5th May, 2006 Ok, I know you can transfer data via bluetooth, but I'm actually kinda looking for a LAN setup between two laptops because in some cases the other PC may need to connect to a SQL DB on my PC to test or present the new software/website.

Oh no. Marquees again... :~ I thought Chris had done the right thing and disabled them... Please, please, please, please, please, please, please (is that enough), please, please, please don't ever use marquees. They are evil and should never have seen the light of day.

Marquees are annoying because they're a distraction - they draw your eyes away from the important stuff. It's up to you. It annoys a lot of people - we've had this discussion on CP before many times. I thought that after the last one Chris disabled them. Unfortunately not, it seems. How about a compromise? You can have a marquee if you set the speed to 0 ;-P

I think you just hate the name "marquee" what I have is a very little "v" that scrolls like an innocent-looking snail, you say you get distracted by it, but People carry Large- -Rectangular- a Bottle like or a cricket Bat like thing as their Sig, but they say it never distracts ;P
