I am about to release a server I have been renting and need to ensure that everything outside of the OS is wiped clean so that future renters will not be able to recover anything. Has anyone here used and can recommend a nice free utility to cleanse the free space on the drive while using terminal services to connect? The free encryption package PGP contains a WipeDisk utility that will do that. At least it did the last time I checked. ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸

Hmmm. Doesn't the provider do that for you? Or are you being doubly sure? Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. Literally. At least [with Wikipedia] you have the chance to correct the wiki -- Jörgen Sigvardsson

Can't you just format it? I would suspect the rental company will probably just put a clean image on before they rent it out again. They might not care if you format it before returning it.

Remove the drive and take it to the nearest wrecking yard and have them pick it up with that giant magnet at the end of the crane! :)

A format isn't quite the same as a secure delete. Some of them use an advanced NSA or higher munging technique so that the drive table cannot be recreated using a disc tool. If was returning anything to any company I would certainly not do it without using a secure erase program. The caveat is it's about 24 hours per 40 gigs of disc space. You can be waiting a while of course a low-level format works quite well but there's some risk involved in that or there used to be. Not sure if it's still the case or not...

Hammer :) Works very, very well, but hard to return hard drive in working order when the drive is in more than 3000 pieces.

Formatting a drive does not erase the data. There are many programs available to pull data from a drive that has been formatted. That is the reason for the secure erase. They will reimage the drive but that may not do every sector, it may just cover the sectors that are required for the image. Rocky <>< Latest Post: SQL2005 Server Managemnet Studio timeouts! Yeah, just being safe. Do not like to have the possibility that someone has the personal user data from my web sites. Would not be very responsible at my end if I did not try what I could. Rocky <>< Latest Post: SQL2005 Server Managemnet Studio timeouts! Blog: www.RockyMoore.com/TheCoder/[^]
