Well, I'm taking the plunge. I'm going to drop XP and load Windows 2003 tonight. I want all 4 gigs of my ram and dangit I'm going to have them one way or another. Not to mention that it just will make my life a lot easier...

People who don't understand how awesome Firefox is have never used CPhog. The act of using CPhog alone doesn't make Firefox cool. It opens your eyes to the possibilities and then you start looking for other things like CPhog and your eyes are suddenly open to all sorts of useful things all through Firefox. - (Self Quote)

Good backups my arse. I'm pulling the drives and using brand new ones. A rollback will be as complicated as putting the other drives back in.

OH! An excellent question. I think I'll pull down R2 from MSDN and load it.

I totally hate getting knee deep into a rebuild and then wishing you hadn't. I've been saving up money for a while to stockpile new drives for just this purpose. I've got redundant back ups using Acronis True Image on 3 USB drives. I'll be physically pulling the current drives and setting them aside to install on new drives. I'll be sticking the old drives in a server case and setting them up as network shares so I can get at anything on them. Reloading is just to scary a process anymore to start with format C:\ and then hope you are doing the right thing.

I'm on a 10 meg per second connection. The download should take less than 30 minutes. I think I downloaded VS2005 in under an hour. I'm shooting those numbers off my hip but they are close...

yep - a thoroughly professional approach - I shouldnt have expressed my doubt 'hope he's got backups' in the first place :-) btw - liked your "What is the minimum..." post - used it to partially answer "Am I eligible" question from 'mark-us' 'g'

It's a bit on the long side but when someone asks me a question where-in the answer just might change their life I like to try and put some real thought into my reply. It would be easy to post a shallow answer and move on with my life but then that just wouldn't be in the tradition of the lounge here at CP (in my opinion). My backup up approach is nothing I'd call professional. Think of it more as putting on knee-pads, elbow-pads, body-armor and a helmet because you just barely healed your wounds from the last time you attempted this and went into wearing nothing but a speedo by comparison.:-O

It's slow by comparison. When I worked for a major company here in Boise I could download 2 gigs in about 3 minutes and no I'm not making that up. I have no clue what the connection was to support that but boy were those the days. ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!;)

There are some 10 Giga-bit level routers and ethernet switches now serving as the backbones and some Giga-bit ones as the front ends. Even so, giga-bit stands for 1 giga bits / second. Therefore, 2GB = 2 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 8 = 16 G bit. The throughput in practical usually does not reach 100%. It should take more than 16 seconds. And in addition, the outgoing speed regarding to the source side is that good? Maybe there are hundreds of clients sucking the stream concurrently.

Good backups my arse. I'm pulling the drives and using brand new ones. A rollback will be as complicated as putting the other drives back in.

Well, I'm taking the plunge. I'm going to drop XP and load Windows 2003 tonight. I want all 4 gigs of my ram and dangit I'm going to have them one way or another. Not to mention that it just will make my life a lot easier...

In my experience - covering about 3 months - you're going to love it. Win2K3 is the first product since Win2K that Microsoft has done right. XP sucks in so many ways; I have to use it at work, but I'd never install it on a personal machine. Don't be afraid, just do it. The main challenge is to get AD and DNS working together, and it's a major one. But once that's right, Win2K3 runs beautifully. Enjoy!:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9
