I thought one of the cell companies had a patent for using stats to guess what word you were typing from the number pad.
T9 input method, though the stats part doesn't seems to work (typed words still remained at the back of the list). A friend of mine been doing something similar to T9 to be used on mobile devices for a while now (www.tengo.net).
